Greetings Phil. The plant will go dormant once temperatures are cooler. Some species will drop their leaves while others will stop taking up water. You will have to watch for it to give you clues.

Thanks tracy, is it the same for young plants/seedlings? I bought a few 2/3 yr old plants and also have some I grew from seed myself which are around 3-5 months old, so would these just be treated as if it was summer during winter months ie. Keep watering them if they are under artificial light etc

Depends on their size. The smaller ones may not be able to sustain themselves over a dormant period. Definitely not the 3-5 month olds. Maybe post pictures of the older seedlings with a ruler so we can see how big they are?

Ok will get some pics tomorrow and post them on here, but be warned they ain't as fat and nice looking at many I see on here but in time and more learning I hope to be growing really strong, fat, healthy looking adenium plants :)

Hi averil, well spotted there is indeed an epiphyllum in the corner, I just this year bought 4/5 of them to try as they have gorgeous flowers on them. I also have various cacti/succulents but may even sell some or trade to make way for more adenium lol i have fallen for them :)

I was using John innes number 2 with added pearlite/grit but someone mentioned that the sand in John innes is not good for adenium, so I am now slowly trying coir and pearlite and coir and grit approx 50-50 ratio so I guess I will see how that goes?

The larger plants in the pic are 2/3 yr old plants I bought from a cacti seller, the smaller seedlings you see are my first ever attempt at Adeniums as they are new to me this year and already love them even though they don't resemble a real adenium lol

Your plants look good Phil. I bought seeds from ebay and they are three years old now. I had ordered seeds of all "flavours" ,however the ones that have flowered have all been single pink. I'm not unhappy about that but in the New Year I shall order seeds from sites I have seen mentioned on this forum, Mr Ko or another one that I can't bring to mind because it would be really exciting to have something different. This is a great site with great advice and I hate to say it but pics of the most beautiful plants that members have grown lol. One thing I will warn you of though ........ Sometimes there are graphic scenes of surgery complete with gloves and scalpels lolllllllll. Have a great day

I don't want paid Phil, and to be honest I have too many plants now, just happy it will go to a good home. Yes this one was planted from seed in Jul 2012 and it is in rude health. Rats tail cactus is a long trailing horror as my daughter says but they have gorgeous flowers. Google the image and I shall clip some for you if you want. I shall send the plant bare rooted and get it in the mail Thursday at the latest. I'm sure he will love Halifax

Well thanks very much indeed. What feed do you tend to use. I have Chempak number 8 which I got for my cacti and succulents but recently bought a feed called superthrive which I read was a good one. I also got something called clonex thinking it was a foliar feed but think it's more a rooting aid?

Got yr address Phil. Will post Thursday. I'm a bit hit and miss with feed to be honest.mi normally use miracle gro at half dose but I've used tomorite as well. I do know a lot of folks swear by super thrive and chempak. It all gets a bit too scientific for me lol

I recently bought some mixed arabicum seeds too via ebay just to try, old n bald was the seller I think lol, so am sure I will be passing some of them on too in a fee months or so depending how they fair

Hi Gill, I got my superthrive from the plethora of eBay sellers. I nearly bought some from the AdeniumStore but found it on ebay for pretty much half the price. A little goes a long way too as the dosage can be as little as one drop per 'x' amount of litres of water (can't remember exactly how much with looking at the bottle)

Phil, thanks for posting a photo of your Adeniums. You have a really good start on your collection. They all look happy and healthy. I'm not sure that they are big enough to self-sustain a dormant period. My seedlings don't shut down since I continue to feed and water them and provide a source of light. I think since yours are indoors there is a good chance that they won't enter dormancy, unless you keep it awfully chilly inside. I hope some of the more experienced growers can chime in to better answer your question.

Hi tracy thanks for the info. To be honest it took me a while to get the watering right and even now in the UK summer if you can call it that lol I have to watch as the temps in my mini greenhouse don't always reach the desired temps that I would like so take that bit longer to get the pots of the dryer side without completely drying them out. I bought a digital probe thing that you stick in the soil which supposedly tells you how dry the pot is but even though the compost looks and feels damp the probe still reads like it's dry, so not sure if they are accurate or not lol so have stopped using it for now, another 12 quid well spent....not.

Excited to read that you have made some new friends Phil and Averil has graciously offered up a lovely Adenium to you! It just reaffirms my feelings about the generosity of the members here. Simply amazing.

Forgot to mention, I also bought one of those moisture meter gizmos and it was an utter waste of money as mine even said it was dry whilst standing in a mug of water! I complained and got a full refund, the gadget went in the rubbish bin where it belonged.
