In another post, you said that all your plants are in pots as you live in a flat, and you showed a small patio dahlia in a pot.

Most dahlia varieties grow 3-5 feet tall, often with 12-18 inch stems that are perfect for cutting. These need careful staking to keep them from toppling over. They can be grown in pots, but require a close watch on watering and fertilization requirements, and often do better in the ground.

There are much shorter bedding dahlias that have been developed for annual greenhouse sales, which normally stay under two feet with very short stems but lots and lots of flowers... Meant to be used in pots or in a landscape, and often has no need of being staked like their taller siblings.

Putting them in shade stretches out the stems a bit, and disbudding the side blooms as well as the second set of buds below on the stem might give you usable blooms for vase.

I have never tried to do that with the bedding dahlias, though. I have just enjoyed them for what they do best... Landscape color.
