What are these??

Hello!

This year in our garden we decided to try and grow pumpkins for the first time. So far they have been doing great, at least I think so. The other day while picking some of our other vegetables I noticed these little things.

I have no idea what they are. They started out green and are now a yellow tan color. When they were smaller they almost had the shape of a butternut squash. To me it looks like a hybrid of a pumpkin (it's shape) and a butternut squash (it's color). Is it even possible for that to happen? There are 4 of them and because all the vines are tangled up in each other I can't even tell where it started from.

I didn't think we planted butternut squash this year because last year it didn't do so well but this year we have tons of them. Most of them are further along than the little green one in the background up there. Also this year we tried planting some type of melon but they didn't get any bigger than the size of an apple.

So my main questions are does anyone know what kind of squash this is? And if so how do I tell if it is ripe?

It definitely does not look like the pumpkins we are getting.
