It does look like some form of damage, although very light. Like some insect got to it. I wouldn't worry about it. That sort of thing can happen really easily when the fruit gets very ripe, they're quite delicate. Just cut around it.

I probably should have mentioned tropicbreeze... it wasn't ripe yet but had just a tinge of color on the outside; it was mostly green (as the recipe called for). I'm thinking if nothing is moving around in there it might be safe but wanted to hear from those much more experienced than I. Thanks.

You're right, no problem if there's nothing crawling within the spots. Although, even so just a matter of cutting out any damaged area. I had one fully ripen the other day. Just now there are 2 about 50% yellow so should be good in a few more days (not for cooking).

the few things that will really hurt you like Listeria, or salmonella are really bacteria and viruses that you cant see anyway.

it may taste bad which , yes, i would cut out the bad part.

it amazes me sometimes how people worry about getting colds, getting germs from other people... germs are in the air, on everything we touch... we are exposed to them by the millions every day... its the immune system we need to worry about.

i went to a gym with a steam room for 20yrs... i watched guys cleaning their feet, old men scrubbing their skin etc... i havent had a cold in 30 yrs, since i quit eating meat actually...
