How to hang curtain rod and curtains.

I have three windows that are inset in the wall by one foot. I'd like to hang curtains here but didn't want to block the window but not sure of my other options because the rod would need to be supported in the middle. I'm getting rid of the wood blinds because they are heavy and my 18 month old tries to play with the strings.

I think roman shades or woven blinds would look better. You can still do matching curtains on another window in the room.

You can use a ceiling mounted rod and have your curtains stacked on the walls at either side of the window when not in use. There would be the foot of depth from the window to the curtains, but your child's safety is more important than losing than bit of space.
