Either is fine as the molding is so simple.

A deep red could be stunning, cozy, intimate, make the transition from your very modern cabinets to the older feel of the home. There are dozens of reds to choose from; don't picture a fire-engine! Avoid too blue a red; something with a hint of orange in it, like Algerian Red or Pompeiian Red would go well with the cabinets. We've had red rooms in four of the houses I've lived in (hall, kitchen, dining room, bedroom), all but one in old houses.

Do the molding.

I am painting my walls light sage, have the old white trim, white farm sink and stainless steel appliances and really cool west elm white table.

I would have to vote for no molding in this case. With that particular style of cabinets it feels like overkill to me, especially if you're going for a more casual look.

I would use it below the cabinets as a light rail. I do like it on top though, also.

I really don't plan on putting any chachkis on top. Less to dust and clean. Hard to decide about molding when still under construction. Forget to mention I plan on having the sleek concrete caesarstone quartz countertop....hoping it gives it an earthy look with sage walls, satin nickel hardware and hardwood floors. Just want kitchen to look simple but with some class.:) Appreciate all your feedback. Here's another photo that may help.

I already ordered the crown molding but love celery girl's more!! would love to see the rest of her kitchen. Maybe I can exchange it for something similar. I prefer it without the slant.

A red dining room in our 200-year-old house in the northeast, and a red bedroom in our 20th century house in the southwest. That said (and shown below, if I was successful at this post) I like the red in a single room in the house, but I also love Sachern's idea of sage with your cabinets. Sage would be soft and make a nice transition to older parts of the house too.

Here is kitchen in progress. Decided on crown molding which looks ok....nothing great. Thinking sage walls but don't know how dark too go without losing the brightness and warmth. Painter uses Sherwin Williams.

There is an old sage green sherwin-williams color called "clay bank" that I've used in several houses I've lived in. They can still look up the formula and mix a pint for you to test. I think it may have been renamed something-or-other gray before being discontinued. But it is not gray; it is a lovely sage green. Warm in winter, cool in summer, cheerful by day, soft by night. I've used an eggshell mix as woodwork trim with wallpaper in old houses, and used a flat finish as a wall color with off-white trim in another old houses. Just love it, and tempted to use it again.

As an interior designer of kitchens and baths I would have to say that the molding makes the kitchen look more finished and does not take away from the casual feel you are aiming for. I would go for medium gray walls. Sage green is out of style.
