Small Bath Ideas

*Edit to add: Holy cow this is long, I'm sorry!!!!

I need to redo the main floor bath. I've got to figure out sink/vanity, tile, faucets, paint, and lighting pronto. This is one of those project creep things. The tile in the laundry/hall/bath was two inches higher than the floor on the rest of this level (not to mention being seriously ugly). SO tore it all out this last weekend on a whim, then I explained all of the other things that would need to be done as a result. I'm sure he's kicking himself, now! LOL Here's the area that will get all new flooring (a vinyl plank that he's already chosen and ordered):

The bath is a small (~5x7.5') full bath, but is used more like a powder room since there are no bedrooms on this floor. There is an alcove tub/shower on one wall which will be the only thing staying (I use the tub to wash the dogs and sometimes grandkids). Here is the current layout:

As you can see, there's not a lot of room, especially at the 27x22" vanity, which is against two walls and right at the door. I can't change the overall layout, so the best I can do is find a smaller sink/vanity combo. That's where I'm really stuck!

I would prefer it not be up against the side wall, but that means I could only have a 18" cabinet right? I'm having a really hard time finding anything I like in that size. There are a couple of Ikea sinks that I really like, but I'm not fond of any of the cabinets that go with them. I think this is my favorite sink:

This is the the new Yddingen sink (19.25x16.5", cab is 17.75" wide):

It seems like the largest/deepest sink I could fit there (which is what I'm after), but the cabinet just looks so generic. Would pulls and a prettier faucet be enough to help it? I've been trying to put together a board to get an idea of how to finish out this room, but I'm really having a hard time figuring things out. This is what I have so far:

The tub is a Kohler Villager (already in the room, can't change). That is a sample of the flooring (can't change). The faucet and towel bars are PF Ashfield that I already have, but am willing to replace if you think they don't work (I am not crazy about the faucet). I'm completely open on the tile. I do love white subway with black accents. I'm open on the mirror, as well. I also have no idea about lighting (right now I have electrical over the mirror, but could move it to the sides if needed). I also have no idea about tub/shower fixtures (the original widespread chrome and acrylic stuff has to go!). Paint? The adjacent laundry room will have grey painted cabs and grey/white walls.

Is this all going to be too hospital looking?? Do my lovely GW friends have any suggestions, advice, inspiration pics, ANYTHING that might help? I feel so at a loss having this sprung on me without any time to plan (not to mention a tiny budget).

I'm nearly finished tiling. Hopefully, I'll be able to grout this weekend :D

I still need to decide on a mirror and vanity light. I'm pretty sure I want a round mirror, probably beveled and frameless. Sounds pretty generic, huh? So what about adding some interest with the light? Would an industrial/vintage looking sconce look odd? Something like this? Remember, this bathroom isn't used for grooming.

No, I wouldn't want a clear shade. White or maybe even metal. Should I stick with a chrome light, since the other fixtures are chrome? Or should I attempt to mix metals? I was actually considering painting the wall above the subway wainscoting a very dark matte blue, like the blue vanity in the above pick. The brass sure looks pretty with that blue!

Tile is done, short of caulking corners and edges!

I looked at lights for over the sink until I was cross-eyed. Unable to make a decision, I just ordered the matching Kohler fixture. I'm lame, I know :o

Oops, the photo didn't attach. Trying again

SO is going to texture the drywall for me this weekend, then I can paint. Since this is just used as a powder room, I'm thinking I want to use a very dark blue on the walls. Of all the paint chips I've been look at, I think I like Behr's Secret Society in eggshell the best.

It looks so beautiful! You have done a amazing job!

    Thank you, Lori!

Oh, looking back at the picture reminds me that I need to order the glass shelf for my niche.

This has been fun following the process and awesome progress! Keep the updates coming and lots of photos at the end. Of course the fact that doing the work yourself makes it soooooo much more special!

    Looks great!

So impressed with your tile work, Errant!!! It looks so amazing! Are you still planning on making your sink stand yourself? I can't wait to see how it comes out since that was my original plan too. (we opted for small/shallow profile furniture style sink instead, in the end). Keep us posted!!

    Thank you, both :)

rebecca, I'm not making the sink stand, after all. When I drove all the way to ikea to get the sink I wanted to use, I hated it. Out of desperation, I ended up coming home with this

I changed the knobs to the ones that match my faucet, and it not so bad. That, or it's been sitting in my game room for so long that I'm getting used to it.

    Dang, your good!!!!

Beautiful & I can't wait to see the navy on the walls

Still not done, but here is the paint. It's Behr's Secret Society in eggshell. The ceiling is is Glidden's Raindrop white, to match the laundry/mud room just outside :)

I still need to finish caulking around the tub, hang the towel bars and install and paint door trim.

I also need to find a mirror, something to hang above the toilet, and something to hang over the towel bar that will go on the wall opposite the toilet. Any ideas?

Oh, and a shower curtain and towels. I was thinking plain white, or is that too boring?

Beautiful! I LOVE the paint color and I an NOT a blue fan but it looks so classy!

The sink looks great-- I think you will like the storage drawers to hide a few things, extra soap and towels.

You could do a white shower curtain until you find the perfect print to add another touch. Maybe white with a navy border or a monogram?

Thank you, Missy. I'll try looking at some options with borders. What do you think about decor over the toilet and towels?

For the mirror, I'm thinking I just want a simple beveled round, but am open to other suggestions.

I just ordered this ceramic cat toilet brush holder LOL

Errant, you did an AMAZING job on this bathroom. The tiling is flawless, people will want to hire you! I had liked your original idea of the black accent tiles but now that I see the finished result, totally agree that using all white was the way to go.

And that dark blue paint is phenomenal. I'm not normally a lover of deep intense wall colors but it really makes the whole room 'pop'. And your sink/cab choice looks great with the crisp glossy white and deep rich navy.

That's DIY? Wow, you've got skills, Errant! Love the kitty toilet brush holder, too. I immediately thought of a shower curtain like this to go with your classic blue and white:

My kitty toilet brush holder arrived. He's weird, and I love him!

Oh, and I have a question. I'm about to hang the towel bar, then started wondering about the height. Are there any rules or guidelines in regards to towel bar height? I never really thought about it before, just always replaced what was already there.

What amazing talent you have, Errant!! You are pulling this together beautifully.

After some searching, it seems 48" is the norm, so that's what I did. Something that's really bugging me, however, is that the drop on the 24" towel bar is less than that of the 7" bar. Am I being too OCD, or should I contact Kohler?

Ack, I just went back and read the specs on both, and that's just the way they are. Looks like I will have to learn to live with it!

I am so amazed and impressed that you did that all by yourself! It looks fantastic, and I love the paint color. The tile work looks fantastic. Please come to my house :-)

What type of art would you prefer? Fun, serious, bright, subtle? I think I'd stick with white towels and shower curtain, and find a great mirror and art.

Thank you, jlc! Funny that you posted the cow, I was actually looking at this guy at World Market. I decided he's a bit too whimsical for me. Then I saw these, and was thinking they'd be interesting on the wall opposite sink and toilet:

They would give me a bit of the brass I was wanting against the blue wall. Then maybe stick with bugs and hang this over the toilet?

Both are from WM, so easy on my budget.

Speaking of budget, I love the mirror you posted, but that's more than I want to spend. I'm actually leaning towards a mirror I saw when at IKEA. Very inexpensive, and the right shape and size, but would the stainless frame look odd with my chrome fixtures?

I would pick a classic mirror...like the Pottery Barn Kensington mirror. I would do all chrome with the fixtures. Very nice bathroom.

The white and navy shower curtain or all white would be awesome.

I love the cat brush holder!

I have that IKEA mirror with chrome faucet and...I regret it. The stainless is very dull and the whole effect is a little more minimalistic than I guess I wanted. I think it would not look right with your very tasteful room.

I should get around to spraypainting mine sometime.

I think with your classic touches that an oval mirror would look nice? What about something cheapish like this oval pivoting mirror from Home Depot?

Edit - just saw your request. This is a link to my powder room. It's still no more decorated nor have I yet repainted it...I am very slow. I am eventually going to move that medicine cabinet as it is just too too much.

Thanks for sharing the picture of your bathroom, robo! And don't apologize for being slow! As you can see, I work at a snail's pace. I don't really feel like the stainless finish clashes with the chrome in your room. If anything, maybe it's the scale of it above that adorable round vanity that's throwing you off?

Initially, I had considered a pivot mirror (but in round). Then I started thinking it would be a pain to clean the backside and the wall behind it, so nixed that idea. I was also worried that having such traditional tile with a traditional mirror, would make the more contemporary vanity look like the odd man out.

Maybe I should just stick with a frameless beveled round? I do prefer the ease of cleaning frameless mirrors.

I REALLY feel the stainless will depress you, it will clash horribly. I don't always think that way about mixing chrome and stainless but just in this instance I'm relating it to my own feelings. It's not a nice bright stainless.

I also have that same vanity in another room and I don't think it reads contemporary in your room. It's just so plain that it can go anywhere.

I'll tell you one thing I did for mine that you might like - I replaced the knobs with lee valley chrome ball knobs and it looks nice and sharp.

    http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=40526&cat=3,46742,44005,50469&ap=1

I'll keep looking for mirrors, then :)

I did change the vanity knobs to the chrome Kohler knobs from the same line as the fixtures. It does help tie it in more.

Sorry, I missed that! My apologies!

That's OK. My thread is long and rambling, and I'm terribly indecisive LOL

I picked up the mirror framed bugs and hung them on the long blank wall. Half of that wall is behind the door when open, so I had a hard time figuring out the placement. Wheat I ended up doing was centering the right one over the towel bar, then the other two to the left in a straight line.

What do you think? They are weird, without being whimsical, which seems to suit me.

    Hi, Errant

Love the bug prints! I have a couple of real butterflies framed and hung in my powder. It's the perfect room for oddities such as that, imo. :)

Regarding the mirror, I found this one on Wayfair:

    http://www.wayfair.com/Howard-Elliott-Rectangle-Scalloped-Frameless-Mirror-36008-RD5025.html

They have all kinds of frameless shapes under $100.

Thanks, zmith! Now I need to search for complimentary pieces for the other spots. Something larger over the toilet, and something small over the hand towel. Should I look for more bugs, or maybe botanicals or birds?

And thank you for the mirror suggestion. I did find a 23" bevelled round, which should be here Friday. The Ikea mirror will be here today, I think. But I'm pretty sure I won't like it, as robo suggested, so it will be returned (or maybe just put it down in my weight room).

    last modified: 10 years ago

Oh, I didn't realize you already settled on a round mirror. I think the plain beveled edge is the way to go.

I ordered my butterflies from this vendor: https://www.etsy.com/shop/BugUnderGlass

He has all kinds of cool insects. There are other Etsy sellers that offer real pressed botanicals if you want to stick with a nature theme.

I like the butterfly hanging you posted from World Market!

Thank you for the Etsy shop link! They have some really neat stuff :D

I've hung an unframed round bevelled mirror above the sink. I'm still looking for art, and fell in love with this bird print:

'Vers Toi' Matted Framed Canvas Art by Sylvie Demers · More Info

Is the 16x20 size OK over the toilet, with the 24" round mirror next to it? If I go with this bird, I think I want to change the mirrored bug art to more bird prints (11x14 with same frame and matte) by the same artist. Or is that a "matchy" no-no?

I've decided to ditch the weird bug art in favor of more birds from the same artist. I bought three, in 14x17 frames, but I think that's too crowded on the wall. I tied hanging two, but that feels off, too?

Oh, and a small one over the hand towel:

I love the colors in the prints against the blue walls, but have I put too much?

I like it. What I sometimes do when I am unsure is just leave it all hanging and walk into the room several times over a day or two. If it feels right then perfect if not I typically will figure out what the design issue is and fix it.
