Not quite sure what your concern is about the stem color. Are they all Phoenix canariensis palms. Washingtonia is characterized by the reddish trunk btw. Ditto the question on watering practices. When you touch the soil is it moist or dry or somewhere in between? From the pic, I cannot tell if it is wet or dry.

I used John innes no.3 for most if it, mixed with a little bit of another soil I can't remember what it was though.

They've both been in the pots for 6 months. I was worried about watering them too much, maybe they could do with more though. I only water them twice a week usually. How often should I be watering ?

The new growth is lush green with little yellow ends.

You said they are planted in compacted/dense sandy soil so it's possible water isn't dispersing into the palm's root ball evenly enough. Are they in full sun? Hard to over water potted plants in full sun during mid summer... but test the soil with your finger to be sure.

The soil is too mucky. Yellow is from lack of Oxygen at the roots. You might pull them out ,wash off the mix and re pot in a mix with much more perlite or crushed lava rock or grit.

It wouldn't hurt to enlarge the drain hole. I have used big plastic ornamental pots...then took my pick and punch holes at the base (4 holes spaced) to make sure water could drain out. With ceramic,just chip away with a hammer and screwdriver. If you had masonry drill bits- even better. Then drill more holes underneath.
