You have all the pieces of the dinning room set and they look in great shape, don't paint the set. If you want to paint, paint the walls a brighter color. If you want to keep the green and gray color plan going, add more green. I would change out the mirrors for large bright pieces of art, to brighten up the gray walls.

If you do not want to paint it, then I would definitely paint the room a lovely warm cream color for contrast with the wood furniture.

I would buy another rug like you have already, tape it along the long side and put it under the table. The larger new 8 x 10 rug will rub out all the dark wood floor.

I would also white wash the dark brick and paint the mantle a white

green or blue to match the colors in rug and add more light to the room.

The grey stripes on the shades can be painted green or blue on the stripes for more color to balance all the dark wood.

Find a large pair of/or single art piece to hang over the fireplace.

Place your mirror over the low breakfront and find a pair of tall vases and add some taller greenery in both vases to give you a nice focal point in the room.

Frames done in dark wood on the mantle in similar style for your pictures.

Recover your chairs in a pattern that coordinates with the rug in blue green white fabric. Use bold colors so they show in the room.

I was reading another post while looking for pictures and someone suggested looking at Swedish Country Design a look that would lend very well to your furnishings.

I like your shades and rug; they give a youthful look to your room. I would consider modern chairs in white or painting your existing chairs and adding a pop of colour in the upholstery; possibly painting the fireplace white and painting the room a brighter colour. I think the furniture will bring you lots of pleasure; enjoy.

Don't paint a family heirloom. I would replace the chandy shades and the rug. Get sleek frosted glass shades or a new drum fixture in a bright or brushed metal. I like the idea of using another of the same rug to make a larger rug but I would pick a different one in a more solid bright color. larger mirrors and modern artwork in sleek frames would add color and light. You could spray the black metal light fixture to match silver or brass frames. Add more modern or transitional lamps on the mantel or buffet. More lighting and good furniture polishing will make that wood gleam. I wouldn't use greys because they would be dull with the wood, but the green from the rug could work. i would prefer sage or celdon. you may want the walls bright and creamy and leave the greens for accents. seasonal table linens can add color without big commitment. pick colors from your china.

Do you like that it's a traditional room, or would you prefer it to look more modern? I agree that it's a bit disjointed as is, because the rug and chandelier look out of place.

The wood of the dining set is dark enough that it could look modern. I don't think you need to paint it. I think you could modernize it a bit by reupholstering the chair fabric (you could do this yourself) and/or adding a colorful tablecloth or runner. I would clear the mantle of knick knacks and lower the mirror above the mantle or else replace with art (since you already have a mirror in the room).

It looks like the rest of your house has painted white trim. Why not continue it in the dining room? That will do a lot to brighten up the space.

Also, I think the chandelier itself looks a little... out of sorts. It's a flowery, traditional body with whimsical modern shades. I think you need to make it more coherent, either by spray painting the body so that it's more colorful or replacing the shades (my choice) or the whole fixture with something a bit more understated.

Rug is too small and doesn't compliment Granny's furniture. No more mirrors in the room--remove at least one or two. Why is the top of the buffet covered? Damage?

Thanks all! Rug is temporary. Larger blueish rug was damaged by dog - liked size not color. Furniture is damaged a bit but certainly worth refinishing. I appreciate all the comments. I will not paint the set now. Will focus on walls, rug, art and chandelier. Great vibrant painting over buffet now. Will switch and put mirror over buffet and that over fireplace to start. Grateful.
