Appliance panels-who does install?

I just had a cabinet maker at my house to measure for an estimate. He told me that he would make the panels for the fridge and dw, but he would not install/attach them. He was so adamant about it! He said whoever installs the appliances should do it. In my last remodel 12 years ago. I used a design build firm and I can't remember who put the panels on. Would this be up to my GC to do?

The professional cabinet installer is who installs them when you purchase production custom cabinets. A Local custom cabinet maker that doesn't finish his own cabinets in house, or install his own cabinets, or won't install appliance panels, is NOT a real custom cabinet maker. He's a parts assembler with questionable skills.

I'll talk to my GC about it. I'm thoroughly depressed about this, since I thought I had finally found "the one". In every other respect he seemed great. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

How can a top fabricator template if the panels aren't in place? Should he guess where they'll end up? What holds the cabinets above a refrigerator? The panels. Is he going to come back to the job, pull the fridge,and install them after the panels are installed by the fridge man?

It's cabinets/panels, tops, and appliances. If he can't do things in order, find someone who will.

Thanks Joseph! I knew it sounded weird, which is why I was double checking. I will check with the GC- maybe he would put them on before templating is done. Otherwise, I will keep looking...

I don't understand what there is to be depressed about, or why anyone thinks it's weird. You said your cabinet maker will make the panels, but not install them. Several of us confirmed that that is normal. After all, if you don't get custom cabinets, your cabinets are shipped, with the panels, from somewhere else to be installed by someone other than the cabinet maker. In my case it was the GC (who installed the cabinets and the appliances). In Lisa's case, it the person she engaged to install the cabinets. No big deal.

sjhockeyfan: I'm not literally depressed, rather I'm discouraged that there is some question regarding his cabinet making skills. This means I need to keep looking or take a second look at another cabinet maker I was considering. I'm further delayed, that's all.

live_wire: I agree that it is a red flag. He said "I used to put the panels on the old sz refrigerators, but I won't touch the integrated ones. I'll make the panel. But the appliance installers will install it. Same with the Miele dw." The more I questioned him, the more adamant he was. I thought it was questionable.
