What direction does it face?

What is the soil like?

Where do you live?

Sunny or shady?

Will it be watered when needed?

No picture, the slope is up from the house, (we are in the middle of the slope, the slope faces the north, the soil is poor but can be amended, I live in northern BC.

There is no sun until the noonish, because the home shades the slope, after noon the slope is in full sun, but again because of the hill we get a bit less sunshine than more open areas.

It does get quite hot but the 'season' is shorter. I have noticed the daffodils bloom about 2 weeks later on that side of the house than on the other side.

Yes, I would water.

My primary question, which I realize I confused by adding info re home site, is in general what is easier to maintain, lawn or an area of mixed shrubs.

I am leaning to the shrubs.

I'm leaning toward shrubs and trees also. Carefully chosen for low maintenance, of course.

Slopes are just not ideal situations to attempt to grow a lawn - hard to establish, hard to water properly and and hard to mow. I'd go with shrubs and groundcovers every time!
