Here is a photo of my maple, plank, wood island. I have Carrara marble on the perimeters. I love them both and I wouldn't do anything differently. We've been in the house for a little over 4 weeks and I do have a tiny etch on the marble, but I seem to be the only one who can see it. But, I full expected and accept the etches as I feel they add character. Over all, I haven't found the marble difficult to maintain. I wipe it down with Method Granite cleaner (which is for marble too).

The wood island also has a few minor marks, but it's nothing much and in fact, you have to really look at it at just the right angle to see them. I wanted a distressed wood countertop, so this just adds to the look. I will have to reapply a wood sealer to it as needed. It's not difficult and it only takes about 20 minutes,

I am so glad we went with both materials.

Zarze29, keep looking at photos to see what really appeals to you. Personally I like the look of a different counter and island when they have a high degree of contrast but a similar aesthetic, i.e., natural with natural or man made with man made. So a darker wood with a white marble, or a lighter wood with a dark soapstone. Or white Quartz with dark Quartz, etc.
