Honey oak banister

My girlfriend hired someone to update her outdated oak banister painted/distressed in black. I would like to try the same on mine (pictured in oak). Any idea how they might have done this...black paint, distressed and waxed? Possibly black chalk paint, distressed and waxed? Any ideas helpful.

I'm betting it was painted and then wiped with a rag. They really did a good job of it. I would suggest buying some pieces of oak that are finished to look like yours and experiment. Maybe start with satin finish black oil base paint.

It could also have been stained or painted and then lightly sanded so the under color shows through.
