Proper support for 44" x 60" 3cm granite table

We are having a granite table made out of leathered black marinace (44" X 60", 3 cm thickness). Our kitchen designer has suggested pedestal legs that are laid out in a criss-cross design (4 legs going out about 31 inches on the diagonals). They will put plywood underneath (although I don't know what thickness). We asked if it was strong enough to support the granite and they said they've done it before. We love the look, but after reading several Houzz posts on the topic, I'm a bit concerned. We want it to be a table so want seating all the way around. Do experienced and knowledgeable granite folks think that we need other support, and if so, what type? Thanks!

We ended up doing 42x62. Finishing touches still have to be done, but you'll get the idea. If you have 72 inches, you could consider two smaller pedestals. with ours, we'd only have a couple of inches in between the two pedestal so just went with a single. Hope this helps. Good luck!

We didn't end up using the above since we were making a counter-height table. They built a box with 2 by 4s for a pedestal base and reinforced it all around. Then glued a 3/4 inch plywood underneath the granite. It wiggled a little at first, but then they added more cross-wise pieces of wood to the base and that took care of the issue. It doesn't move at all now. The base is covered with skin the same color as the base cabinet of the island. The pedestal seems to be working out well, and allows them to run power up the middle and then we can have outlets around the base so we can plug in laptops, appliances, etc. They are still not finished with the base, but I could post a picture if that would be helpful.

Hello, I have purchased a piece of stonewood granite many years ago to build a table. We also have 2 leveled redwood stumps as a base 3ft wide approximately. The table should be 4x8 feet to sit 8 people. Any thoughts on reinforcements under the granite? Our fabricator did mention plywood as well. Wouldn't you notice the plywood?

Plywood has little structural strength when it comes to supporting stone. A custom steel frame is a much better choice.

@madhugerstner - It's covered with a skin so looks great. It has been 6 years and we have not had any issues with the plywood base.
