The material is called stabilised rammed earth. It's a bit like concrete in that it gets poured into a mould and gains strength as it cures. The difference is that it's not as strong as concrete and is much more rustic in appearance. It's a beautiful material for a rural property.

Price difference to brick?

What kind of wood is on the floors? Beautiful!

Kelheg: When the house was built in 2006, the rammed earth cost around AU$300/sqm. I'm sure it's more now. It's a fair bit more expensive than brick, but it is 300mm thick, which is about the same as a triple brick wall. Now that I think about it, I imagine there's not much difference at all.

Mdglaser: Thanks for your compliment. The floors are made from recycled Grey Ironbark, a native Australian hardwood. They were sourced from a demolished bridge in Queensland, then shipped down to Victoria and re-milled into floorboards.
