Based on what I can see of the homes on each side of your home, this is a very nice neighborhood. I'm guessing you bought the worst house on the block. If that is indeed the case, a major remodel is more than financially justified. My recommendation is that you find and work with an architect who is known for transforming homes. Houzz is a wonderful resource to locate architects and be able to view their work prior to any phone calls or meetings. I also recommend that you look at stories on Houzz about how to remodel a home and also stories about homes that have been remodeled.

I would paint the brown shakes white.

The black of the garage is too strong in my opinion. I would paint it either the color of the brick or white. I thin the front door should be a softer color, too. Either a light blue or green. An earth tone would work as well.
