Hairy Passengers

Or I guess, furry.

Here is the guilty party:

She loves to go with us in the car, short trip or long, and the cargo area is her domain. (she gives you a really dirty look if you need to put anything in there with her, no matter how small).

So anyway, we just got a new car a few days ago (not the one for my DS; this is one we ordered last April... it just takes that long). It is the same as the old car except the colors. You can see where this is going.

The floor of the cargo area is protected by a rubber mat. The sides, however, are dark gray carpet. In our old vehicle, it was tan carpet, a closer match to its primary occupant. I've only put a few hundred miles on this new vehicle, and already it looks like a doggy salon back there. Do they sell something to cover the sides of such an area? Or am I going to have to buy a dustbuster just for her?

    She's gorgeous. Dustbust away!

I have 4 of the hairy type kids. I haven't yet put them in the cargo area of my SUV, but they, and rescue dogs I transport go in the back seat. I got a great seat cover from Amazon, and just Googled cargo area covers. There are a bunch of them. Check out several links here.

Thank you, I don't know what I was doing but all i was getting were seat covers! I need to go look at the back of the vehicle again to see where the carpet is; that's the killer.

I haven't looked in ages, but there is a pet supply company online, Drs Foster & Smith, that has car seat covers that you might check out.

Outside, those were only seat covers. Thanks to My3dogs I know I need to search for cargo covers. So far have not seen one for my vehicle, prob because it is a 2016. I know the floor protection we had in our 2011 did not fit in this one, so I bet the cargo covers dont either.

My advice if it will bother you- buy a new car with tan carpet again :)

Our furry passengers either ride in the back seat or their crates go in the car w/ the seats folded down. I've tried everything w/ the beagle hair in the back of the grey carpet in our SUV and nothing works. Hair gets behind sheets, behind covers, underneath towels. Cleaning people can remove some of it w/ the vacuum but I have not had a dog-hair free car in eight years...

Ya know, it pizzes me off because i wanted tan carpet but they don;t offer it with the exterior paint color I wanted. That's a whole 'nother rant, how you really can't pick colors or most options either, it gets loaded with all sorts a junk whether you want it or not.

Interestingly, we don't have much dog hair in the house (thrice weekly cleaning), but it took only one long trip for it to look like heck. Maybe it is seasonal shedding.

Depending on what brand of vehicle, there are some OEM dealers who offer the type of thing you're looking for as an add-on accessory. You can also see if there is one available that would fit your vehicle here: http://www.cargoliner.com

Best way to get dog hair up is to wear rubber dishwashing gloves and just wipe it up.

    Works like a charm.

Golden can get away with anything, though. How can anyone be mad at or say no to a golden?

My dogs ride in crates anchored to the floor in the back of my Pilot. They should have some sort of restraint to keep them from getting thrown out of the car in an accident. The crates also help contain the dog hair.

I had covers that went up the sides of the back of my wagon. The dogs were not fans because the material was a little slippery. Maybe they make some that are for the sides only.

Mtn, this is what I meant....maybe they call them cargo liners, cargo covers, whatever.

Could you just put a giant blanket back there, or an old comforter?

SueB, Thats not the part that is hard to cover (the floor) it's more the sides...

How do you like the car so far? Very happy with mine, once we got past the hard to diagnose noise it had when I first got it. Have around 5k miles on it now and no major problems. There are a few software based recalls and I'll get those done during my first oil change coming up soon.

Hi Chispa, I like it a lot. Glad to hear yours has had no more issues! This is our second one (we turned in a 2011), and it's really my favorite car of those I have owned. It's big but, to me, not too too big. And it doesn't feel like a "Mom car". Some of the features I never would have chosen, I ended up liking quite a lot (eg the blind spot indicator). It does feel strange to me that the stick shift (?) is so far forward; I was used to resting my hand on it. Do you use the odd feature where it turns off instead of idling? Makes the ride a little less smooth, no? I have to read up on just how fuel efficient that option is.

One thing I am vacillating on is the color. I got Aleutian silver (we usually get black cars, by any other name) and it looks like Baby Shower Blue in some lighting. DH says between the car and the flamingos, I have girlyfied everything while he's been travelling!

What type of car is this? We all need to know!

Im already fantasizing about buying a smaller, non-mom car in maybe 5 years...I've been driving a mini van or SUV for 12 years now.

I don't know if this would fit the bill. We always had SUVs with three rows, and we still do have one with three rows that we need on long trips (with 5 of us, the dog, and my girls' shoe assortment). But most of the time, we don't need 3 rows. OTOH we get a lot of snow and there are a lot of winding country roads so I personally like an SUV. I have the Range Rover Sport (it's a little shorter than a Range Rover) and I love it. It's probably just good marketing, calling it a "sport"!

But if you want to fantasize, get a BMW convertible. They are readily available used (because really, where we are, it's kinda dumb and I think people often regret it). We got one for the beach, and boy does it make sitting in summer traffic when you are doing errands a lot more fun! For years I would not have considered it because who buys a car that seats 4 when you have 5 people? Too bad! I never wanted a convertible, even as a kid, and now I love them. Don't you have a birthday coming up? : )

Mtn, yes the shifter is a bit odd, but you get used to it. As far as the auto start/stop, I hate it and always turn it off. I think for 2015 there is a recall to adjust the software and many were having problems with it hesitating and not shifting properly. You can also permanently disable by pulling the wire on its battery.

Silver is a good color! Easy to keep looking clean. I don't think I have seen one in that exact silver, which is good as you will have a unique color! I picked a less trendy color too and Iike standing apart from all the black and white one here in LA.

Sueb, it is a gas guzzling large suv ... probably best not to go further on the topic! ;-)

Edit: Mtn just saw your update. Didn't realize you went with the sport, although it does share many features with my full size version and most recalls/issues apply to both.

Yeah, the Sport is the "hip, youthful" version. It has a few details that make it veer toward sportscar and away from Momvan. Or, at least, that's why they have me thinking.

I "downsized" from a Honda Osyssey (2 in a row) to a Pilot (which I hated, and drove less than 2 years), to an Acura MDX. It's the smallest SUV I could find that still had 3 rows. I need 3 rows because sometimes (not as often these days) we all travel together -- 2 adults, 3 adult-sized kids plus the dogs. I also participate in a carpool that includes 5-6 teenage girls. So I'm stuck with the big car for a while.

DH has a BMW and is always telling me I should get the BMW SUV, but it's not big enough.

yeah, the bmw suvs are very nice but not big enough for a family of 5 plus guest and dog(s). We have GL 450 that works sizewise, and before that we had the LX570, both 3 rows. But SUVs with three rows, well, to me they don't look or feel very sporty.
