Atisouth - I hope you are still interested in the bird portraits. I believe they are chromo-lithographs which were printed by an engraving technique then hand coloured. I have a set something similar of a series of natural history vignettes commissioned by an amateur naturalist for his private library in France 1815. I speculate that in the latter days of the Ancien Regime the book was divested into smaller portfolios. The detail on these images is incredible, a single hair used for detailing.
