Thanks for asking, Julie. I just posted one for you. Look at the "Upward Expansion" project. The existing house was a good solid home with lots of space on the 1st floor, but no basement, and not much usable 2nd floor. Our project made the most sense for adding family space and much-needed storage.

Obviously, I know depending on materials used, any structural issues, etc. can make a HUGE difference in price, but how much would a remodel like this cost (very loose ballpark figure)? My husband and I are looking for a house in a very specific area and having trouble finding anything. If I knew what a remodel similar to this costs, we may take a second look at some homes we passed up.

You are correct that construction costs depend on quite a lot of variables. I cannot say with any certainty whatsoever what your costs might be. But, here in the DC metro area (which is expensive), adding a new 2nd floor on top of an existing one is likely to be between $300K and $400K. And part of that is because, when you add a 2nd floor, you have to include 1st floor work. There is always remodeling there, too.
