Problem switching out my thermostat, please help!

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to read this. I am a novice with this stuff and could really use your help. I am switching out my old thermostat for a Honeywell wifi thermostat. The old thermostat was battery powered, the new one is not. So I reconnected all the wires as they were except I connected the blue wire to the 24vac common plug to provide it with power. Unit won't turn on. Then I looked at where the wires connect to the furnace. Everything seems to be ok except I noticed a beige wire (which isn't even one of the wires present by the thermostat) attached to the 24vac C screw plate and the blue wire not connected to anything. So I disconnected the beige and connected the blue to the 24vac C on the screw plate by the furnace. Still no power, and not sure what the problem is. I have attached some pictures of how I currently have it set up. Any advice is really appreciated. Thank you!

Is the first picture the original thermostat? And is this a heat pump?

The first picture is how I have it attached with the NEW thermostat. Don't know exactly what you mean by heat pump but the thermostat controls both the ac and furnace. The other pics are where the wires attach to the furnace. Any advice? Thanks!

Straighten out the rat nest in front of Y & W then reshoot pic two or three. In two it appears white is going to R but in three red is to R and white is loose. As you dress wires try making it clear which brown jacket each wire comes out of. Neatly fold unused wires to side making it clear they are unused.

To help you answer Weed's question take your choice of (A) turn the heat on,make certain heat is coming from vents then go outside to see if outdoor unit is running. (B) Shoot a close up of switch controls on face of OLD tstat.

Is the red wire making a good connection? I see a lot of exposed wire at the thermostat.

See if you have a fuse on your circuit board, and see if it's blown.

Hi all, thanks for your help and advice. Figured it out...Turns out I wired it correctly. I had the front cover off the furnace so I could access the wires. However, apparently the unit won't turn on if the front cover is opened. Oh well...

I'm disapointed one of you didn't know that,my excuse is I didn't see the door leaned in the corner. LOL

The reason I asked if you had a heat pump system is that the blue wire is used for something else (O/B) with heat pumps.
