Hello, thank you for your question and interest in our work. These roof apertures are open air and allow sunlight to pass through as well as cast shadows on the courtyard below. They do this while maintaining the overall roof line and not inducing unnecessary snow loads. The lower roof protects the entrance and continues out to the carport beyond. Thanks again.
