Question about Homegoods items

last modified: 11 years ago

There's a brand new Homegoods store near our new neighborhood, so while DH and I were out doing some shopping today, we stopped in. They had a pair of these lamps (above photo), which I LOVED. They remind me of the lamps I fell in love with and posted here not long ago ...

Except the color of the ones at Homegoods kinda brings to mind barrel cactus, which I think is pretty cool. And they're only $49.99 each. The photo from my phone doesn't quite do it justice, but it's a very pretty lamp. There were a pair of them, and one had a shade that had a slight crease in the front. As the store was brand new, people were crawling all over it and I couldn't find anyone to ask, but does anyone here know if they will discount an item if it's damaged? I'm assuming they will not have more of these lamps "in the back"?

Those are beautiful. I'd grab them and ask if there is a non-creased shade available.

Thanks, Tib. We scoured the aisles and would've just switched shades with another pair of lamps, but wouldn't you know there were no other shades identical to the ones on these babies. I really liked the shades that came with them, too, as they were not tapered at all but completely cylindrical. I guess I could always get 'em and hunt for new shades -- but I was really wondering how Homegoods works. Do they not have other items in a storeroom somewhere on premises? I'm thinking, from convos remembered here, that what's on display is all they have. Correct?

are they going in a spot where you can just turn the shade to hide the crease, but also so the seam isn't showing?

Here are also some suggestions for getting wrinkles and dents out of lamp shades:

Ok, I rushed back and got em! The manager gave me a whopping $5 discount, but I really love them so I wasn't leaving the store without them! They're large but I think they'll be perfect when we get our new nightstands. And now I know a little more about how Homegoods works. The manager gave me some song and dance about their already deep discounts. But yeah, $102 and change for both of these lamps was well worth it!

A couple of times I've asked for a discount on damaged items and they've done it. Not a whole lot, but something. Of course you should be OK with whatever the damage is.

Tib - thanks so much for those links! I have a little steamer and I'll definitely try it on the dented shade. Haven't got anything to lose, and hey, it just might work! :-)

Unfortunately, the dent is right on the front ... the seam is directly on the other side, so no way to turn it to face a wall.

    Wow! Those are gorgeous Jen.

I love them! (put the one with the dent on his side so if he makes another dent hubby will not feel so bad))

Jen, you were lucky they were still at the store when you went back!

I have to agree with the manager. Those lamps at, say, Pottery Barn, would cost @ $150 each, so at $50/ea., even if you have to buy a new shade for one, you're still way ahead of the game.

I wonder, though, if they'll make good bedside lamps. Do you read in bed? Not sure they'll be good for that. Time will tell! Just love them. four years ago, I bought a similar lamp at HG only mine is smooth. It looks like an onion. I love it. Didn't like the shade that came with it. It's kind of like a animal print, brown with black, but I got it home, turned it on at night (it's in my bedroom on a dresser) and it was perfect and stunning. Shade stayed!

I know, Chispa - I hurried back fearing they'd be gone, or that ONE of them would be gone. But nope, they were right where I left them. :-)

Tib - I know you're right about price. My inspiration lamps were $150 each, so I am definitely ahead of the game. The lamp - I've only got one in use at the moment - currently contains a 40-watt bulb which is just awful, but I'll replace that with a 3-way soon. They probably won't make the greatest lamps for reading in bed, but I can always turn on the overhead for that if needed. My tendency (if I'm honest!) is to watch TV in bed more than read. Too, I'm thinking that once we furnish the room, I'll want a comfortable chair and perhaps an ottoman (if there's space) in one corner and I can always add a reading lamp there.

I still really want this bed:

And a pair of these nightstands:

I know it's been said that, being an eclectic soul, others can't really picture me with a matched set of furniture such as this - but I am really drawn to these pieces. I envision a cool, serene, uncluttered master bedroom in sea glass shades. Although I'm thinking I may have one wall devoted to my watercolors of English cottages, the rest of the space will be fairly minimal.

You were lucky they were still there. At the store nearest me, yeou learn to put anything you are thinking about in your cart while you ask questions. If it is a yes, it will probably be gone before you can get back. I have a crystal lamp I got there under $100 and then saw in a lamp shop for something like $5-600. Crazy sometimes. I don't seem to have trouble finding lamps I like there. Hope that holds, because I just sent off a couple with my son for his apartment.

If you are planning seaglass colors, these may work even better than the inspiration lamp.

There's a brand new Homegoods store near our new neighborhood. I'm sorry for you! I dreaded the day HG's opened in my neighborhood; I have to pass it too often on the way home.

    Love the lamps though.

Gorgeous lamp, jen! Glad you found two so similar to your first pick and at a better price to boot.
