I believe I've heard some of the flooring experts on here speak highly of Karndean products. Specs say the wear layer is .55 mm which is even better than the recommended .50. I was considering laminate for a very long time but have now decided that with a pool, two dogs and a cat that vinyl is the way to go. The samples I've seen have been outstanding.

I am looking at installing the County Oak looselay? Any thoughts? We are also thinking of putting it everywhere in the house. Less maintenance with having two kids and a dog. We currently have hardwood and wondering if we can install over top? Anyone done this before or should we just rip out the existing? Someone said we could overlay it on top but not sure if that is a good idea?

Glue down is the gold standard of LVP installation but that is a pro job. In 2015, Karndean may have been best but their best products are designed for a pro install and your total cost can be $10/SF or more.

Modin has a 40 mil wear layer, twice the industry standard. IMO rigid LVP is the best vinyl option. Modin Rigid (from Flooret, online and on Houzz) has very large planks, handles like 1/4” plywood and has the 40 mil wear layer you won’t find anywhere else. It has a cork backing and the rigid core means within reason subfloor imperfections won’t telegraph through like traditional LVP. Costs about $4/SF.
