My husband tiled our kitchen, dining room, pantry, laundry area and related closet and hallway and put hardwood in the living room so I know how much work it is. I applaud you for doing a great job, and your kindness to your wife in giving her a gorgeous kitchen she can be proud of for years to come.

Beautiful. What kind of stone did you use for the island? It's very pretty.

Thank you. The island is covered with Alaska White granite. The work spaces are covered with Black Galaxy. We decided to go with the darker color for the work space as it's more resilient than the Alaska White as well as to create a defined 'spaces' within the kitchen. Here's a picture of it, the lighter areas are a lighter white in person.

The borders were done with a different hardwood product. They're white oak with a dark stain which I believe was called 'Mocha'. The boards were run along the perimeter of the room 2 boards wide. Where there were transitions to other rooms the boards were run 3 wide to make up the difference. After the border was laid, the inside field (also white oak) was laid as you normally would lay hardwood. Doing it this way added a lot more complexity and time to this part of the project but we're extremely happy with the results. I've attached some photos I took during the installation to better illustrate what I described above.

Thanks! The flooring was a bit challenging in spots, especially around the entrance to the servery. The main thing I had to be careful of was ensuring that every single corner was a perfect 90 degrees to ensure that the field lay correctly throughout the room.
