Unlikely that your neutrals will clash w eachother. Blend your neutrals with metals and textured materials for a layered look - it will give the room depth, and can be a beautiful background for colourful accessories - pillows, artwork, carpet are all opportunities to add accent colour.

Cream and gray are lovely together. Cream and gray are simply a variation on the "white and black" theme. What ever can be down with "white and black" can be done with cream and gray. The gray tiles with white grout lines will help your cream sofa look at home. The eye will "pretend" to see 'cream' grout lines...so no worries there.

The floors are dark so you can play with furniture on the lighter side (which helps with the cream sofa). When adding "warmth" you can think about what colours YOU like. Remember: wood adds warmth. A sophisticated way of bringing in wood tones is to have wood+metal to add sophistication.

When adding "colour", go with what you like. Use your wardrobe as inspiration. Look in your closet to see what you "like" for colour. I'm a fan of red. I have 2 wardrobes full of red clothing. That's me. You have to choose what you like and then go with it. If you like yellow, go with yellow. Purple and gray are outstanding together. If you pretend the gray is actually black...what would you do? Right. Go that way.

Area rugs are meant to be fun and can help define a space both a physical space (dining area vs. sitting area) as well as a mood. Using area rugs to add the colour is an easy way to get inspired. Go a head and shop your favourite furnishings shop. Go for the rug you have had your eye on! Let it guide your inspiration.

Jennifer- here are some rug ideas- with this first one, you can do your cream furniture and tie in some color ( similar to rug) in pillows. Keep drapes simple and white or cream:

Color in a rug would definitely anchor a room. Something with Navy, or Red, or something that is a mix of colors. I think a white sofa would be beautiful - maybe slip covered. But as I read in another post, be sure to use some layering - colors, texture, warmth. If you have a wall that you can find art you fall in love with, you can draw from those colors as well. Sometimes you can have a room with all same colors, but sometimes it's quite nice to break it up some!

Diane Land nice job that room is warm and sophisticated! Your floors are more taupe that cool grey and I agree layering neutrals is key. A nice cream sofa can get different pillows or a rug under it when you want to change your style
