Colors change from wall surface to wall surface...the same can be true of trim. On my monitor, your trim looks identical in color, so the play of light and the angle of the trim to that light can be the problem, especially as it was an issue on the last paint job. Color is also affected by its surrounding colors, so the view through the door can change the effect of the paint on the casing, while the crown is trapped by wall color. Subtle differences, but same paint, same can of paint...same color.

Depending on how much paint the brush or roller had on it for each coat could change the color. For example, if you had more paint on the brush when you did the bottom part, it would be whiter and shinier, and when you did the top, you could have had less paint on the brush, so it didn't come out as white. You could always try putting another coat on the one that is more grey.

The crown molding is angled, so it's "facing" the wall a little bit whereas the molding is facing the room - so they're reflecting different colors.

If it's really driving you crazy, paint the crown molding a just slightly lighter or darker version of your wall color. Or even the same color as the wall...since it will reflect differently and look slightly different anyway. That will also help your walls look taller.

Light reflects in straight lines. Your angled crown molding is picking up the reflected light from your wall color, thus altering the perceived color or shade........your vertical door or opening trim is vertical and thus not receiving in reflected light from the wall color, thus you're perceiving the pure color reflected back from it.........

Thank you all for your input. It is driving my a bit crazy....feel like a nut. I might try another layer on the crown.

Do I just leave it and hope that once everything is done it won't be so bad?
