I know! We had a very old cat, but she's gone now. You're right, that will help the color scheme. Does the room look dated?

Also, I am going to change the wall color and thinking about going lighter. Ceilings are 19 ft in this room so not sure if that the right direction.

I am not positive of the color of the sectional which you want to keep. Get a rug you love and paint your walls lighter than the sofa.

Don't pick wall color until you get a rug. It is very difficult to find a rug to match paint, much easier to find paint to match rug.

I am sorry I do not see any difference in shelving...

I can see that you like the warm tones, like yellows and rust. Absolutely agree that getting a rug first would be the first step. And then work from there. Make sure you bring it home to decide! The mocha of your couch goes with many colors.

I think you can do warm furniture with cool shades on the walls, think of nature-with the woods, and then the sky (like in your art work!) At least, look for a paler color for the walls, and you also need to decide if you are going to keep the curtains? To create a more open and modern feeling the curtains should go with the walls..and when you repaint, also choose a warmer white for the trim.

PS-look for a rug w/some greens too, they will work better on the floor, than on the walls near a kitchen.

HC-172 Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore is a great go-to for open spaces such as yours. It plays well with your brown sectional sofa and then a neutral white/oatmeal rug would be my suggestion. The color can be brought in with accent pillows, art and accessories in your bookshelves. You could also select some darker linen drapes- maybe navy or even statement drapes with a floral pattern.
