GWR Tom Cults

This is largely an observation as opposed to a question.

Seems to me that this term (GWR) can be a bit subjective when applied to tom cultivars. Is obviously used for varieties such as AR German Green and Green Giant and Cherokee Green, all of which are rather thoroughly green-when-ripe. But on the multi-colors, there are several that have been referred to as G-W-R. One example is Ananas Noire... another Everett's Rusty Oxheart. What strikes me on some of the multi's is that some there is a strong probably of the involvement of a "black" variety in their genetic history. This, however, should not be surprising because the "blacks" apparently have genetic coding that does not usually allow all of the chlorophyll in the fruits to transition to other compounds that have different hues. What I have noticed about ALL of the GWR's (including the multi-colored GWR cults) is that their fruits are rather sweet and also rather soft when ripe... and thus prone to bruising and then somewhat quickly going South.

OK, a question or two: What have your experiences been with G-W-R tom varieties ? And which varieties do you consider to be properly classified as G-W-R tom cults ?

I agree.

I have been growing Ananas Noire ( as your example). It has been juicy and can get over ripe and soft, like black tomatoes that I have grown.

Perhaps that is the trait that make black tomatoes tasty ( to me).

Personally my experiences with the 3 I have tried - Aunt Ruby's, Green Zebra, Cherokee Green - have been negative. I don't care for the appearance, texture, or the flavor of any of them. Love most all of the blacks and several of the bi-color. The only type I DIS-like more than the green-when-ripes is the whites.

I also did not like Green Zebra, for color, texture and taste. I have got seeds of Green Copia ( from farmers market tomato) that I will grow it next year.
It is a nice bi color. I liked its taste too.

Hey Sey, Green Copia does look interesting. May give it a go next time. On the G-W-R toms in general, my interest lies primarily with the "black" G-W-R varieties. In this corner, I currently have Captain Lucky, First Mate and Muddy Mamba ... all related and somewhat similar. Also Ananas Noire which apparently has a different line of development than the above 3. Attempted a few crosses using these (3) this go as well... some seem to have succeeded (most failed).

Oh yes, Green Zebra is a loser tom in my book as well... an honory member of the "never try again" list.
