What to do with this Fireplace? HELP

We have 2 big and uneven sized "designer holes"
above our fireplace that just collect clutter and look horrible. Eventually we want to have them dry walled shut and put a mantel along with using faux white stone up the entire thing but while I save for this, I need cheaper ideas to make it look better. Any ideas that cost under $300 are welcome. See image to get a better idea of what I'm dealing with.

A cheap quick solution would be to remove everything from the cubbies and then get an art canvas with boxed edges which would be the same width as the fireplace tile and high enough to cover the area from the top of the tile to just under the niche of the television. Paint the canvas with your wall paint and mount it over top of the cubbies. It's not perfect but it's going to hold you until you can rebuild it.

That's not a bad idea. I hadn't thought of that. I've also contemplated putting a shelf in the right hole to at least hide some cords and maybe add a small decorative piece. Not sure that will help much but right now it's also holding our dvd and cable box.

I have seen similar where the cubbies were painted a darker color, and a statue put inside. The room was Asian themed. It looked great.

Yea, I was considering putting some sort of decorative piece in them. I hadn't thought about painting them darker inside though.

Your original plan to dry wall over all the indentations (including the one where the TV is) will be the best solution--do it right away. Then you can lower the TV to a less neck breaking height about 6 or 8 inches over the fireplace. Don't try a temporary fix. You should be able to have this drywall done for $300.

leelee is right. Don't waste money on temporary fix. You don't have to do the mantel or stone yet but the drywall is your first step.

I would spend the money covering them with drywall.
