Pincushion · More Info

Every once in a while it crosses my mind that maybe I should
get a new pin cushion. Why, you might ask? Well, only because my
pincushion is quite old. No, it wasn't my grandmother's, or great
aunt's. It wasn't even my mom's. This pincushion has always been
just mine. Just today, as I was brushing it off, I got to thinking about
all the times this little tool has been with me: prom dresses, doll
clothes, shorts and tops, bridal gowns and Christening gowns...mending, boat
cushions, curtains and tablecloths, and, yes, quilts!! We've spent a lot
of time together, my pincushion and I!! Even still, it's not all the
fabrics and the pins, but it's always a sweet reminder of a long, long time
ago....I guess maybe 42 or 43 years ago. Joe and I were just married and
I wanted kids so badly! But, he was still in school so we did the next
-best-thing...we were foster parents for two little boys who lived in the local
Catholic orphanage. We could only take them for weekends because I was
working and they had to go to the Catholic school during the week. Well,
Christmas came one year....not sure which one, because we had those two little
boys every weekend for several years....anyway, this one particular year, they
brought me this little pincushion as a gift. I'm sure the nuns made the
pincushion as a gift for the boys to give. We never were able to
adopt either boy, as their parents would not relinquish them even tho they
never did go back home to the families. (I know, the story is too long!).
Over time, we've lost track of both of them, but I so often think of them, say
a little prayer, and hope that their lives were filled with as much joy as they
gave to us back then. No, I don't think I'll get a new
pincushion!! That's my pincushion story!! Does your pincushion
have a story? Or, do you have another sewing 'tool' that has a
