Any shape rug, as long as the chairs fit nicely on it. Personally, I am not a fan of round on round, but that's just me.

First two are from the family room, and the last is from the kitchen. I took the drapes down, to put in new windows. Not sure what I'll buy to replace the drapes. New colors will probably be pale gray. Plan to refinish the white cabinet in the corner, to sell. Not sure about the long buffet.

You have a lot of furniture in that space way to maximize the storage:) I agree with removing the white cabinet from the space, it is in an awkward area. Then I would also pick between the tall cabinet and the long buffet and only keep 1. From there I would have to say that a larger square rug may be the way to go. Can you also lower the chandelier it is really high from the top of the dining table. See if you can find some small shades for the bulbs to dress it up with out buying a new fixture (lamps plus.com). I would think about adding the draperies back at the window to soften the room. No matter what piece you choose (tall cabinet or the low buffet) I would put the piece on the wall that the tall cabinet sits on now. I really like the idea of the long buffet the base is very aesthetically pretty with the curves and the openness of it lightens the room dramatically. Thank you so much. I know the room is tight...The tall hutch was a wedding gift from my f-in-law 40 years ago, but the buffet, I prefer! I love your suggestions. Will absolutely do what you said. I'm moving forward immediately! But you're right, I do need more storage! In fact, the downstairs towels are kept in that white cabinet!

For some extra storage here is a sneaky idea. It looks like you have a soffit on top of your kitchen cabinets from the top of the cabinets to the ceiling. I have had Clients in the past (who are not wanting to re-do their kitchen but need more storage) remove the soffit and have cabinets made in that space ( attached to the wall like the ones that are already there. It is high but works well for items like china and such that you don't need accessible every day. They can be made for less then you think with a simple flat door style:)

In my opinion, I think the buffet is a better fit for the space. Love the idea of a square rug! I was actually going to suggest the same. Lamps Plus is a great resource for lighting fixtures-I buy almost everything there. Good luck with your space!

Thank you for all the suggestions! As far as the soffit, my son made cabinets like you mentioned, at his new house. They look great, and he has extra tall ceilings. Unfortunately, he is living in Europe now, or I would get him to do them for me. We have no pantry, and need places to store small appliances, big bowls, etc.
