I've done several of those but never used water. I used my regular potting soil along with along with rootig media but actually many rooted without it .

Transitioning from water to soil requires the cutting to produce a different type of root so it's usually stressful For most types it's usually better to start with soil though there are many types that can be rooted very well in water. gary
