I looked it up and yes the unripe fruit is poisonous (causes unsteadiness, burning mouth, throat and stomach, and vomiting). It is considered an invasive weed in many areas. It's common name is kangaroo apple.

This pretty plant has got to go I'm afraid. I live in zone 9b and we have way too many invasives we are fighting already to let another take over. That and I can't take a chance on the grandchildren getting to it.

I bought one many years ago..it did get weedy and rangy. I cut it down and forgot about it. About 6-7 years later? A new one sprouted. It grew where nothing else was so I left it. But,its weedy and rangy again....
