What to do over the winter?

First time growing tomatoes and it's going pretty well. I grew a tomato plant on my balcony in a big pot and now I'm wondering what I should do when the plant dies. Should I just leave the tomato plant there to decompose? Will it decompose fast enough to re-plant next spring, or should I pull it out and throw it away?

Here is what I would do:

-- cut the top, pull the root, ..discard them.

-- Empty the pot, let the soil dry up and put the soil in a bag and save it.

-- Wash the pot and store it in a garage, shed or basement.

The next season you can refurbish the potting mix and reuse. Goo potting soil is expensive.
