I saw the mature ones she cut off, the more variegated ones, lol. But they are TALL! And so beautiful, can't wait to get these out of that knot and see what I'm working with. If it's more than one plant, I want to pot them up separately.

you're right about it bein a hybrid. It's desertiI (or something like that) x trifasciata.

maybe I'll try to cross pollinate with some of my dwarf sans if I ever get flowers together.

Well, it's sitting in a giant empty pot as you see it now so I've kinda got it potted up. And yes, the tops were cut off so when they were thrown in the garbage can.....they'd fit.

She's a giant, WN, the rhizomes are bigger than even the masoniana.

Did the property owner tell you this was Fla H-13? I can't tell from the pic but is there a deep, rounded channel running the length of the leaves? If so, that ID is likely. If the leaf is completely cylindrical with no channel, then it's something else. S. cylindrica grows to 5 feet and I'm sure there are variegated forms of it. Leaves of large ones would be elliptical in cross-section with no channel other than at the very bottom of the leaf.

My non-variegated H-13s in the past have grown to 5 feet tall, Chahinian says they can be up to 7 feet. The trifasciata X deserti cross was done by USDA in the 1950s in a government program in search of fibers to produce cordage, or rope. Soon after, rayon and nylon was invented so the program was abandoned. Many of the program hybrids ended up in Hawaii at a location in Koko Crater where Ed and Alva Eby found, propagated and spread them around to collectors.

Woodnative, I've never even seen the variegated form of Fla H-13, which makes laticauda's find so amazing. I mean who would figure someone would have a big stand of this in their back yard who is not a sanseviera collector????

Laticauda, is this person's yard full of other rare sans??? If so, you should drop by on yard trash collecting days, or better yet the day before!

She did say that's what it is and she has gotten rid of a lot of her Sans collection, I think? But she took three of these and put them in big pots so, she's keeping those in her collection.

She has the mini spoons for sale, I really am tempted to get that, but I can't make up my mind.

Okay, I'm glad you have a positive ID. I'm trying to think if I've ever known a collector in Oklahoma City, I don't think so. How big were her mini-spoons? There are quite a few different ones, some smaller, some larger. At least one has red or red-purplish color at the bottom part of the petiole. I can see if I have extras of these and can send if you have room for the winter. Nice thing about the mini's, they only take up a 3 or 4 inch pot of room. I've always thought S. fasciata looks like a 'big spoon', and the one I have has a rusty orange color on the petiole.

For the mini-spoons, I'd say one individual leaf was shorter than 4 inches tall and maybe 3/4 inches wide...this is from memory, I'll have to check when I see them again.

I've always wanted to grow one of those species, but I kind of already have an emotional attachment to them for some reason and what if I did something wrong.

They are plugging along, not happy.

Maybe I'll give an update on them after they've been outside for a summer. It's such a big plant, it doesn't afford much light and water while inside the house.

I'll have to measure how tall the pups are. One of the old crowns did flower for me two years ago though and it's still not dead so we'll see how it goes. I was actually thinking of PIG. But then I'd have to dig up these giant rhizomes to save some over winter.
