Split Foyer Lighting

Do the same hanging rules for regular foyers (shade at halfway point if ceiling higher than 14 feet or 7 feet above floor with 8-foot ceilings) apply to split foyers? And how large/wide should a pendant or chandelier be in a split foyer? I guess it depends on how big the split foyer is, right? It's a 70s split level. This is a pic from 4 or 5 years ago - that light is still hanging there. Help! I'm not much into traditional - looking for something with a black, wood or dark frame (think iron or metal like this one at PB: http://bit.ly/1UZhRWP, maybe less faceted).

Do you have a good lighting store that could give you some ideas? There are tons of lights and you should find many to choose from. A company like Framburg can make a light in many finishes. Sorry I can't be more help. I'm looking for a foyer light too but have the opposite issue. Looking for something nice looking for a smaller space with an 8 foot ceiling. So many are really big. Good luck.

I would love to know what you chose. We have a very similar situation, with a split foyer and almost exactly the same ugly (sorry) lantern. I have looked at a million chandeliers and still can't find one I like.

Ceiling height for split foyers is an excellent question. We too have that style of home that is still under construction (being re-built). Our foyer light can be seen from the living room, which is a consideration (we have a railing that goes longer than yours so the light can be seen in the living room too). How low does your current fixture hang. It looks to hang lower than one foot from the ceiling. Do you like the height of the current fixture?

I found this advice on a google search. Maybe that will work for height placement.

A foyer with a high ceiling -- 11 feet or more -- presents additional challenges. You may wish to divide the vertical space in thirds, positioning the fixture two-thirds of the distance from the floor, so that the ceiling height does not overwhelm the space. If the foyer is large and has a high ceiling, choose a slightly larger fixture than formulas suggest. A well-lighted ceiling seems closer to viewers than one that disappears into shadows, so additional light can provide coherence to the proportions of a large, tall foyer. What light fixture did you end up getting? We also have a bilevel home and looking to replace our wiith a either a globe or square pendant style. Just not sure what size is appropriate for the space.
