i like white risers, i find them much safer to see my footing going up than on the wood treads and risers at my vacation home.

iron balusters wouldnt be out of character but you need to choose the correct style. google 'regency staircase' for a lot of good ideas.

I love the staircase as it is. I would consider changing the color of the walls in the foyer to one with a little more depth.

It is beautiful as is. Perhaps a carpet runner would work to "spice" things up. The right style of iron baluster would not clash with the traditional staircase, but with the the number of balusters you have would be fairly expensive.

That being said, you could test it out with Sherwin Williams' visualizer tool and see if you like it. Tried to find a pic of what you want, but the below is as close as I could get --

Oh my goodness, the staircase looks sooooo pretty the way it is! Is that your decor in the photo? Doing the dark color trim can look really cool, but I can't visualize it going with those soft blue walls. Are you planning to re-do the whole foyer in a new style?

the decor is actually before we moved in. I am changing all the colors, but actually planning on keeping the color in the entry. I really do like the effect. I see what you are saying about the dark against that soft blue color. Thanks for the input!

I like your stairway as is. The white risers are classic. I don't think they ever go out of style of course you're living with it and paint is easy to change. Something I want to do with my stairs is paint a black handrail it looks good with the white spindles maybe you could consider that if you want a change

Black baluster

I think dark colored risers feel more colonial and will also become the focal point vs the other lovely features. I would be tempted instead to stain the baluster and the steps a dark ebony color - more classic for your style of home and very modern at the same time. This can be a dyi job as well.

Live in the house for a year before you take on a strictly cosmetic reno. I don't think what you're planning is necessary or will improve what you already have, but you can figure that out next year. Who knows how you'll feel about it then...
