revive this bathroom?

Hi,

This is a powder room, the wood is American oak and used to be beautifully finished. Now all eaten up by sun and water, looks bad. Lots of natural light and sun from skylight.

We would like to renew if possible without taking apart, since sink is glued on etc. But if it has to happen it has to happen. Other than sanding and refinishing same wood in place, any ideas?

Also, all input on any aspect will be greatly appreciated, we were on a minimalist deal when this happened 10 yrs ago :) There is a towel rack to the right of the wc and that is all, space is small.
Pic taken from the door.

Open to all suggestions!!!

Thanks!!!

sand and stain in a dark cherry or espresso finish, it will pop!

add stacked floating shelves of the same finish behind the toilet.

move the towel rack to the left of the sink

paint the walls a light pale blue.

move the picture to above the towel ring.

get some fabric baskets in a color for pop.

Wow, never thought of coloring the wood! Great ideas, thanks a million!

I always wondered if real people would actually want those designs

you could also have some tile around the sink to keep it from damaging so much. It might be even easier if the peel and stick kind works out (everybody has them). i have not messed with yet. But my understanding is they look great, are easy to remove with a hair dryer, and I think you could just cut them with scissors, much easier to fit around bowl. You also can do one of those extravagant dark bathrooms with all the light! Show you a few that should fit your minimalist style.

ok, so i lied, there are quite a few and they are not all dark, but I adore them, chandelier look even better with the natural oak.

granted not quite the same but with a white bowl and natural oak, could achieve the same look

utilitarian, but elegant all the same. yet oh so easy to duplicate.

let me know and I will remove. Have fun.

Agree with flair to go lighter. It'll be a little bit harder, but you certainly wouldn't need to dismantle everything to refinish this, just make sure you tape off the sink and faucet very well so they aren't damaged during sanding or refinishing.

I would either frame the existing mirror or get a new one.

    Tons of great ideas.

Now that I am looking at the room in a picture, the more I see it the uglier it looks....

iN your honest opinions, would it be better to just rip out the sink and base and do something else entirely?

Maybe I have been too resistant to do something more drastic... but the effect could be much bigger? I could keep the sink... (or not)

The toilet does have to stay.

    Thank you all so much!!!

havingfun, thanks for all the pics!!!

i think I was trying to show you all you can do with them. You might have to click on them to really see, that you do not have to rip out your fixture at all. fix the damage done, use a lot of polyurethane or some other protection so it does not happen again too quickly and then by changing around it with little expense you have a whole new gorgeous bathroom! wall papers and tiles are now both removable. the now have paints like metallic or suede, the options are endless. You can do an unusual paint with stencils if you don't want wall paper.

i will let you look at them a little longer, then let me know if you wish to remove.

I think I would still start with doing a darker stain on the counter before deciding. It'll be a little work, but it is amazing what a little paint or stain can do for a space for minimal expense.

Has anyone ever tried just putting a frame over an existing mirror?

it isn't a heavy frame, but I put a lightweight lazer cut frame over a mirrornin one of baths, just used some 3m squares. I'll add a pic soon.
    Here is the mirror

That is nice so people can just put something like that over their heavy built in mirrors. Rather than tear it all out. You know you can decorate your mirror like those expensive glam ones by adding craft mirror bits and crystals right on your mirror.

I really like the bathroom, if you still like a minimal modern style. i think with the refinishing that flair suggested (and several good coats of polyurithane after!!), you could keep using this for a long time. at least until you have a strong feeling about a new style.

You might also look at adding a glass or stone tile (havingfun's "bits and crystals) border around the mirror. You would add the border directly on the mirror, eliminating the need to remove it and/or patch and paint behind it. Home Depot offers a workshop for framing a mirror with tile, and downloadable instructions on their website. There are also a number of online tutorials. Good luck with your "revival" - you're getting some great suggestions from the houzzers!

Thank you all, you are helping me so much!

I found this pic on Houzz, what do you all think of the stain? Is that sort of the espresso you meant Flair?

And yes, the mirror definitely gets framed or changed!:)

sEriously considering the bright shiny thingies Havingfun :)

Then Id look for something to do on the wall to give more umph.

the pic ( not the bamboo wall, just the vanity color? eVerything else is white now though...

haven't you seen how great dark wood looks against white? Let me did I am sure i got a picture here somewhere. Large crashing and rummaging noises. "Darn Tardis" always to big when you need small....

Aha! Boy either the world is not into white, or I am not. something 300 pics, and only 3 with white walls. lol Have fun!

Yeah having fun, that's it exactly.

What I am seeing thru pics is that of course it will look good in brown and pop, but a bit obvious if onlybrown/ white. So the walls have to come into play for more depth and punch...

Maybe I need to move :)

I actually really like your bathroom. Definitely remove the little towel stand which sits next to the sink. Can you move the toilet paper holder to the other side of the toilet so you don't see it when you enter the room? Sand down the wood elements, stain darker and coat with marine varnish. Since it is designed for boats, it will withstand moisture much better. Paint the walls a light color of your choice which looks good with the wood stain you choose. A small wall mounted tile rod to the left of the sink with a couple of hand towels for that color pop. As few items as possible on the sink top and shelf. Send "after" pics!

Well, yes eli, moving would resolve this bathroom problem. Except, you then have to get it ready for the move, so it is on again. then you will move and have a different problem. I truly don't think you can afford to move all of us everytime you move due to a deco problem. better we just deal with this one no? Though we appreciate travel expense vouchers. tehehe

The marine varnish is a good idea, but don't use right before any big parties and you might want to use a fan even after you have finished. Heard the stuff smells awful and can even be awful for you til totally dry.

then you can post a big water scene like the man and the whale and call it a day. hmmm or maybe the giant squid from 20000 leagues.... i better go, before this gets worse. But really this is a tempest in the teacup, you will stain dark, work hard not to die over marine varnish and like giving birth, forget that horror when you appreciate how great it looks and performs. you will then decide if you want to be extremely sophisticated or have a sense of humor, and we will all enjoy it as we always do. talk again soon!

a minority vote against doing anything with the mirror -- its minimalism matches the vanity, as does the wood trim at the top -- I'd keep it and refinish the wood part to match your new finish. a frame will not look right here.

Thanks acm... would you still leave the mirror in that non-center position re the vanity? Move to the other end?

And yes, everyone, amazing how I never realised the roll of paper was first visual upon entering... jeez
  • 11 years ago
    flopsy,
thanks! THe marine varnish should also take the intense sun. well, right? Great idea. And I agree with the little towel thingie on the

Try putting your soap up on the wall even -something like this maybe?

go dark and make it cosy, maybe a dark blue? cos it looks very cold.

my 2 bathrooms are dark, havn't got much in them yet I love them. I sadly didn't choose the beige tiling, it was already there, but before mine both had BEIGE walls = 0 personality. Now it is a dark aubergine by Farrow and Ball. and the main bathroom is a dark peacock blue by Dulux.
