They are kid-proof (softer spines than most cacti, still sharp though), drought-tolerant, and keep giving off new plants. We have even cut off a baby plant and kept it inside without water for 8 months and it survived. They take about 3-5 years to grow from this size (https://instagram.com/p/4zy6DMr4ne/?taken-by=modernhive). This picture was taken during a hot summer day in the middle of a California drought.
