Miracle Gro potting soil is not very well recommended for any long term container growth. I'd suggest you visit the Container Gardening forum for some insight on a better quality potting medium as well as various suggestion for growing just about anything in a container.

You should be aware that growing large vines - like grapes - in a container is in effect a natural dwarfing mechanism. They produce very large root systems to support all that top growth and if the root development is restricted - like it would be in any but an extremely large container - then the top growth will be reduced as well.

At this time of year, insects or other minor leaf issues are of no concern on a vine or plant that loses its leaves for the winter. Just clean up and discard after they fall naturally. No need to treat.

Thanks so much for replying. That's a good idea. I will post this in the container gardening section as well. I am not so much worried about the size of the plant, as long as it is healthy and happy. So dwarfism and low fruits harvests are fine with me, as long as it's not a stress to the planet itself.

I am growing this vine in Houston, TX (Zone 9a) so I don't know when the vine will start to loose its leaves. Many of the trees in Houston never become fully bare. I don't know how this translates to vines.

Today I noticed full blown, fat, half-inch caterpillars munching on the leaves in a group of 5 or so. As well as these small ant-like things congregating on the bottom of the new leaves... Should I be worried?
