Question - is a different cone of Cl Cecile Brunner sold in Oz than other places? The usual one we have here could repel anything (are your neighbors who need repelling human or animal?).

Here is mine, climbing up our 3 story house. (The rose way on the left of it is a banksia lutea just finishing blooming).

Human or animal? Honestly I'm not sure.

Apparently the rose sold as CB clng is a spray type. I've never seen a house eating thing like that. Ive just seen them as a hacked thicket dotted with flowers year round, so not once blooming.

Have you looked at the page for the spray-type on HelpMeFind? Also look under 'Bloomfield Abundance' since 'Spray Cecile Brunner' has been sold under that name for a long time. I do recall some pics on there from Australia. Now that the real BA has been found, hopefully that will end....eventually.

Yes, I hadn't thought of that. In the UK some folks are still selling Spray Cecile Brunner as Bloomfield Abundance (despite the fact that it has been proven to be a CB by DNA testing - "my mind is made up - don't confuse me with facts").

Here is another picture of a Cecile Brunner in my garden. I have no idea which type it is, but it was 80+ years old when this picture was taken. Perhaps a good old clone of the bush type, or the spray type, who knows? It never put out climbing canes, so I don't think it is the climbing type. The second picture of it with my DH when it was not blooming is so you can get an idea of the scale - that is all one plant.

(BTW, my huge climber on the house is not a once bloomer. It blooms mainly in the Spring, but then has scattered bloom most of the summer, and this year in July it actually had a lesser "flush").

If I needed to repel feral neighbors, I would use Louis Lens' 'White Surprise.' Or maybe 'Alba Odorata' Both are big bushes, capable of eating small children and pets.

Interesting roses, but I've not seen them offered here.

If the "Cecile Brunners" don't perform in thier role, I might try Susan Louise.

I think I prefer more oriental (tea/china) looking plants.

You could always try New Dawn, Adam :-D

Consider the ample charms of 'Alba Odorata' :

I have a couple of Indica Major/ Odorata bushes along a fence line where feral cats used to cross. They were rootstocks from roses that carked it and make VERY thorny climbers with quite flexible canes, once flowering in spring. I have seen them growing up huge trees in old gardens, thriving on neglect. I trim mine a bit a couple of times a year to keep control, but am not too fussy about it as they are favourite nesting places for a variety of birds. HMF has photos and descriptions, but I would bet you have also seen it around or did it not make the grade in WA.

FWIW, I also have a spray CB which is kept about 2.5m tall and wide but it really wants to get bigger. Not nearly as thorny as IM!

I don't think I've seen it around. It might be one of the weed roses recorded in the south west.

here are some pics of the plants I bought as CB clng.

I have never seen Cl. CB to my knowledge, but I have bought CB, only to find when she flowered that I had the spray form, where the buds have foliated sepals and the flowers often proliferate, which I was told was the giveaway, as was the size to which it it rapidly grew. When I was young we did indeed call it Bloomfield Abundance, but SOME of us now know better :-)

I really hope that's what these are.

Adam, I wouldn't use clb Cb. She's a bit of a wimp. You could try Milkmaid, an Alister Clark rose. In Melbourne she covers about 8 metres of our pool fence and flowers from Cup Day (November) till well after Christmas. If she's unavailable in WA what about Albertine? Totally beautiful for a couple of months, impenetrable ever!

    Go the Eagles!

Also, Louis Len's "Pink Surprise" is amazing and would repel feral neighbors as per Jeri above. The foliage is gorgeous.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I don't have any support down there, so I was looking for more of a rangy shrub than a climber per se. Crepuscule would have been perfect, but it isn't exactly well armed.

I had planted Albertine aka the devils snare before, but it kept wanting to grab at me so it had to go. Beautiful flowers though.

My plants are in the ground now so I'll just have to see what they do. The shovel is just behind the shed door.

Here they are again 3 weeks later.

Lots of nice new growth, but it doesn't look like a climber.

    What do the experts think?

    Found one bud.

The sepals on that bud look like Spray CB to me, Adam.

    Excellent news!

I see your next crop of parsley is on its way ! :-D

I'm more excited about the flower spiders it hosts.

My hoverflies love it too. I have had enormous numbers of them this year.... The aphids didn't stand a chance.

I feel like this is the perfect time for you to plant Mermaid :)

I'm even more impressed with lilium lankon. Perfection. I may need more in future.

I have a love/hate relationship with my 2 Mme Bs, but yours is lovely. I have just moved 1 into a slightly more shaded position to see if I get better summer blooms. Your 'Showery' CB is gorgeous. I mentioned on another thread I had to hack mine back about 4 weeks ago and she has shot up from 2' to 5'+ and has candelabras of buds just getting ready to open. At least the sun won't fry HER.

crossposted. Love the lily and the ladies... I think something (snails) ate my lankon but the orange tiger lilies and Christmas lilies seem to have survived and should flower in another 2-3 weeks

I didn't take any chances with my Lankon. It's safely potted.

There is a spray CB reclining on a fence near a cafe we like to frequent. Shes probably 8 feet tall and 5 foot wide. Spectacular.
