You could try a labradoodle, they are a fun breed and have the benefits of a poodle when it comes to no shedding but the disposition of a lab. Both the poodle (which actually was originally a hunting dog) and the lab are extremely smart so you have that benefit too. They can however be a bit hyper and bore easily. They require a lot of exercise and tasks to keep them busy and challenged.

How about a Westie? They are not foo-foo dogs, just ask one. They are sturdy, but as a terrier, need exercise.

Oops, a Westie would not be considered a sporting dog.

Since animal allergies are caused by dander, perhaps you may consider getting a short haired breed as they may cause less symptoms. Long haired ones collect more dander and sweep up airborne allergies (pollen, dust, mold spores) as they roam.

I would recommend spending time with the breeds you are considering.

We are just about to adopt a Berger Picard. These are lower shedding dogs in the herding class. Their prey drive can be enhanced or minimized. They do not have lanolin (my brother is allergic to lanolin so avoided dogs with lanolin)

They are a rare breed and we didn't start out looking for a rare breed but the breed found us and hopefully we will have our puppy in mid November.

This is the breed used in Because of Winn-Dixie. I would recommend that you watch the movie if you consider this breed. They really smile and have a good sense of humor. Of note, they don't tend to be frightened of thunder and don't tend to smell like doggy despite these elements in the movie.

Myself I like the herding breeds more than the sporting breeds....due to a calmer disposition (often), willingness to accept direction, and high intelligence.

I have allergies, but not to dogs (cats are another story). I have both an Australian Shepherd and an accidental (stray) Havanese.
