If you're replacing all the floors now, why wait to change the trim? If it's in good condition, and the proper size for the room, just paint over the oak. White trim would look great with the grayish floors.

Also, if you trust your designer, you should heed his advice, since he is the one who is actually in your house and whom you are paying!

Yah...I've heard this. The tones that are favoured right now = brown with gray undertones (like walnut). The "gold tones" found in oak flooring (when finished with a solvent based finish = turns yellow/orange) are "out of fashion" right now.

The gold in the oak is being replaced (in fashion terms) by "mid tone" browns that are less gold and more mushroom brown. Plenty of people are having their oak floors refinished and are moving away from the traditional "ambering" finishes that leave the floor with a distinct "honey/orange" tone.

As to the OP: if you are changing out the trim anyway...don't worry about it. If you can live with it for a while, you should do so. It costs less in time and money to ignore the clash until you have the ability to change out the trim.

Think of the clash as an incentive to change trim sooner rather than later. It can be a motivator for change ;-)

Thanks Cancork! I found a great color which is exactly what you are talking about and the tones in the grey/taupe flooring we chose actually look great together. Also, my Kitchen cabinets are only 7 years old and do not have the amber tone. It looks great in the kitchen, especially with the black/charcoal granite countertops and the streaks of charcoal in the wood floor.
