Are you growing it in the ground or in a container? Makes a big difference.......

Container

Long term container growth calls for a very durable, fast draining, bark-based media. Something like Al's 5-1-1 or a modified Gritty mix. Recipes for these containers soils are presented and widely discussed on the Container Gardening forum. These are homemade mixes - it is nearly impossible to locate a premixed bagged container soil of proper consistency and quality, although it may be possible to modify something like a cactus mix to work

Whatever you do, stay away from the very finally textured, peat-based stuff most places sell - anything like Miracle Gro. It is not structurally adequate and breaks down and compacts rapidly, requiring much too frequent repotting.
