Crimson King put out bloom again, about 3 weeks ago, before the heat wave!

I have one that is putting up a bloomstalk... Not sure what it is but I look forward to seeing it bloom. I might have others if I had time to get out and clean out my beds..

It's exciting little bit! I feel a little irrationality excited about this. I keep on checking it out and....nope, no different than a few hours ago (bloom already!)

I am eagerly watching buds on 5 rebloomers - that I have not seen bloom before. I received them last year in a box of mixed iris. They did not bloom this spring. So I am anxious to see what they are!

I'd like to know if anyone has any particular tricks associated with reblooming iris? When I first moved to Virginia, the house I moved into had overgrown beds of a dark purple iris that we discovered rebloomed in late fall and early winter our first two years here. I gradually got into reworking and dividing the iris beds, that I found hadn't been tended to in over ten years. Although the plants got to be healthy and the beds refilled, that habit of reblooming has not returned for over five years now. I keep wondering whether there is something else I need to do.

Dr bear, I hope you get some feedback as I would like to know as well. For me, it was sheer luck.

Below was a gift from a friend's garden. It's a known re bloomer which has been passed around her family quite a lot. Has a distinctive "Iris" smell which the rain mostly washed away. It's the first time it has bloomed for me and I was quite certain it was a different one but it got mixed in.

How neat to live where the iris have the weather to rebloom! I enjoy the photos! The pink falls are interesting. Maybe I need to get out more, but I don't think I have seen one like this.

One thing I really enjoy about my zone is the long Spring and Fall. I lived in Boston and had a hard time with the harsh winters. I admire those who can go through the winter with grace. I get grumpier as winter continues and spend a great deal of time planning my next garden projects. Even here in zone 7a.

If you are thinking the larger Iris has pink coloring, the coloring is a dark purple throughout with a bit of white near the beard. The pink is actually the bounce of light off the petals that are more horizontally oriented.

No, posie, I was referring to the first, smaller one with very horizontal falls. I thought the falls looked sort of pink. I guess I will take a shorter spring and fall to avoid a hot, hot summer. To each his own. When my husband was attending UC San Diego we lived on the coast there and it was the most even tempered place I have ever experienced. So I know they do exist. I wouldn't have called it endless summer, but endless spring. It was kind of cool all the time.

drmbear-sometimes you get better answers to specific questions if they are put in their own post. Then the heading will point people who have experience with rebloomers to it. Asking it in this post it will be seen by folks who are hoping to look at photos of rebloomers, who may or may not answer, or like me, if they do, have little experience. I have heard that instead of cutting back on watering after bloom when the iris are going dormant for the summer, you keep watering because they don't go dormant but keep growing. I don't know for sure, but I have a rebloomer and it does increase like gangbusters. I think it would be hard to keep them from being always overgrown. I had bloom stalks once in October, but they froze before they could open. They say I can lose a rebloomer to this, but I think this one would just rise up and throttle Mother Nature if she tried to kill it.

I have family on the East Coast and want to stay close, but the balmy weather of the California coast is an exception I would make in a heartbeat. I lived in Los Angeles for four years in my youth. Iris seemed happy there especially with the drier weather.

Hmmm I have seen that SDB somewhere before..I may have it in my corner bed, but will have to get my notebook to see if I can find it.. ( but that is not happening tonight) Ok as far as re bloomers, you know they have bloomed in the fall before.. So that rules out not being happy in your area.. Re bloomers need extra water during the summer months, they can also use an extra dose of fertilizer. and maybe if they were the older variety, they were happier just left alone... I will share a picture of mine later

If the blooms are spaced nicely, then it is really neat when they are "stacked up" like that.

WillowSpring, ever since you mentioned you had buds, I have been hoping you would post! They are worth the wait and I bet seeing those blooms in October probably enliven your garden. Immortality is a stunner and I love the happy color of Harvest Memories. Please feel free to share as the others open!

I have 2 of these iris that bloomed last week. From the list of possibilities I think it may be Earl of Essex - except that both are only 28" tall and I believe Earl of Essex is supposed to be about 35" tall. Do some rebloomers bloom at a different height in the fall than they do in the spring? These did not bloom for me in the spring - hopefully I will have some bloom next spring.

Willow, that is lovely! My other Iris has buds and our dip in temperature did not freeze the buds. So, hopefully, I will have a few to share as well. :)

My Earl of Essex usually blooms about 30", some a bit shorter. I have a lot of iris I got in trades, but pretty certain this one came from our local iris society sale, so pretty certain mine is correct. Mine started blooming last week also.

Well, I've got one more blooming (yay!) It was taking its sweet time and I was worried the dip in temperature last week might freeze it. This one is called "Summer Olympics".

The close up is a bit darker than reality and the garden shot is washed out. I just wanted to show all the buds. As we are going into November, I doubt all will open before a strong frost.

Nancy, my mixed box of iris that these rebloomers came from was from you last year. Thank you again!

Thanks Willow. This is the last for me this year and we see what next year. I am encouraged that they seem to like my gardening style so I bought a few more at my nursery 40% off sale. Mostly Siberian as I was replacing some flopping gladious and thought the foliage is a good (well behaved) replacement.

Nancy, I would love to see what is blooming for you! Willow, I am hoping your weather behaves until some flowers come out (and you can share the pictures!)

I have had less rebloom this year than ever, been an odd weather year. Wet May, long dry June, then plenty of rain since. I would have thought I would have gotten a lot of rebloom from my iris, & certainly my daylilies, but neither have rebloomed much. I got rebloom from a few of my Earl of Essex & Harvest of Memories. Iceland has bloom stalks, but won't be likely to rebloom before frost. I had a pink rebloom from a NOID historic that has never rebloomed in all the years I had it. Belvi Queen has been reblooming off & on all summer though, very odd for that one, but I like it! If Iceland reblooms I'll post photos of it.

Here is one more from my garden. It is purple with a few small white flecks. The photo shows some water droplets too. The bloom was 22" tall. I had hoped to get a better photo but this was the best I could do. This might be my last bloom for this year. All of the other blooms turned out to be Harvest of Memories or Earl of Essex. It's been a nice show for the fall though!

Any ideas for ID for this one?

Sorry WS but I don't know what yours is. There are a lot of iris purple with yellowish beards. I have one that got buds this odd year for the first time that is like yours that was marked Full Tide, but that one isn't a rebloomer so I don't know what it is either. I had one that managed to bloom outside since it was so warm and dry late this year, Black Magic, my one and one time only successful outside rebloomer. The purple one like yours I brought inside a couple of stalks, but didn't photograph them as they were frost damaged by the time I thought of it.

Sorry I missed these posts, what beautiful Iris! The black magic is a nice clump. If you can believe it, my yellow Iris has been blooming nonstop since October. Almost at the end of the three big stalks. This weather has been crazy, but I'm not complaining!
