You could do panel tracks, which is the modern version of vertical blinds. They're thicker and sturdier, and much more modern than vertical blinds.

I would do grommet top drapery panels that can stack to one side. They are easy to open and close, they can be purchased Inexpensively, they are washable, and they are warmer and more attractive than any blinds.

What you have looks good but was not practical for privacy and light control for me.

A lot of people find the very idea of vertical vinyl blinds unappealing but before I downsized to smaller home, I had two pair of them for the dining/family room patio doors leading to the deck and on my kitchen windows and found them to be very practical and not at all unattractive. They clean easily and don't absorb smells. They enable you to adjust them for privacy and light better than any drapes can. They come in a myriad of colors. Also, if you want a more formal look, you could always build a wood cornice to hide the top rather than just settle for the vinyl cornice piece. If you had more space beside your windows/doors, you could even create a pocket to make the blinds all but disappear when fully opened.

I still have grey vinyl vertical blinds in my kitchen (work well w/sliding window leading to deck and suit stainless steel appliances well, too) and would buy them again if I ever again have another patio door. No, vertical blinds may not suit a seriously formal room, but the color you choose will make vertical vinyl blinds seem more or less "formal".

HI -- I have two small grand children living with us too. I have had verticals on my patio slider and they are looking terrible now . So I am going to have just some drapes that are washable that I can pull open . Probably going to be with grommets or the I beam with rings .

I'm beginning to sound like a broken record [ that dates me] Verta glide work really good for a slider. They are woven cells that are verticle and open side to side or in the middle. My customers really liked them. Having said that, no window products are indestructible when kids and animals are involved.
