Amaranthus - an annual rather than a shrub despite its size.

Wow, an annual! I would have never guessed because, as you said, of its size. Thanks for the quick response - you saved me many hours of searching (and I would have never found it anyway - I was looking only at perennials.). Now I have to decide whether or not it's worth planting at our house every year. Thanks again.

I think that it's a cultivar called "Tall Towers", an Amaranthus cruentus variety.

Here's one of mine a friend planted for me. She said I 'needed' it. :-)

I might plant a few next year.
