The boards are custom-made using Homasote that is wrapped (upholstered) with fabric. Homasote is the brand name of the cellulose-based fiber board we use. It is recycled paper that is compressed under high temperature and pressure. The composite does very well as a bulletin board, as it does not break down when pins are inserted in it.

Happy to help! You should be able to find Homasote at a building supply store like Home Depot or Lowe's. It is typically pressed into 4'x8' sheets, like a sheet of plywood. The material is generally used to buffer sound in walls and floors, but the composite is fabulous for pinning and dart boards. It accepts and releases pins without impacting the base material -- even better than cork, in my experience. Be sure the fabric you chose to cover it has a loose enough weave to withstand tack and pin marks.
