40-inch stove

When we first moved in to our house many years ago, we loved the kitchen, mostly for the cool Kenmore stove. It has two ovens... and a built-in griddle on the cooktop. Well, it's getting on 25 or 30 years old now and the griddle no longer works. The oven door also refuses to close tightly, so it runs hot and uneven. I've searched on line and there are no longer parts (like griddles and hinges) available, beyond standard things like burners and such.

So we're now in the early phases of looking for a new range. Unfortunately we have a 40" space... Are there other manufacturers who make a model that would work here... that won't set us back $8,000? The new Kenmore model is $2,300 and would be fine, but it hasn't received good reviews and looks even less modern than the model we have.

Any thoughts, Houzzers? thanks in advance.

Contact your cabinet company to create 2 custom 5" box fillers for either side of the range. Revashelf makes a couple of filler inserts that will make them useful and not lost space.

The rest of the kitchen is even older than the range I presume? You don't have an appliance issue. You have a planning for an entire gut kitchen renovation issue. You just haven't realized that yet.

Plan your new kitchen to work with a standard sized 30" range if you want it to be affordable. Or 36" if you want more space and more expense.

Interesting thought, but no. The rest of the kitchen is brand-new, unfortunately. We recently remodeled around the stove, since it was working fine at the time and, of course, didn't realize how rare the 40 inch size is. A poor choice on our part.

We are, unfortunately, stuck, it seems.

Thank you for the idea. We're actually leaning toward finding a single cabinet for the right-hand side of the stove, which would be against the wall. This would eliminate the hassle/expense of altering the existing countertop. Looking for granite remnants or considering other options. Still researching, obviously... we have the luxury of time as, even though it's limping, the stove still works.

Scooting the range to one side will mean completely reconfiguring the uppers in order to keep the vent centered over the range. It's a ton more work than just doing fillers.

Did you end up doing anything about this yet? I'm in a somewhat similar position where we are embarking on a kitchen renovation but would like to keep our current 40 inch wide GE stove. It's 50 years old but still works great and I have no interest in getting rid of it if we can come up with a way to make it work long term.
