Coffee table dithering

We need to replace our coffee table. It looks okay in this picture, but it has some problems. One is that everyone in my family insists on pushing and pulling it around so it is coming apart. Another is that it has some storage in the sides and when I ask for help cleaning up, people in my family shove random things in there, like crumpled up paper from various projects. So then it's a mess inside to clean up.

This one was a cheap Craigslist find so I'd rather get rid of it and find something that works better for us rather than try to retrain my family members.

The question is what to get to replace it. At this point all of the other wood furniture in the room is antique/flea market finds. The throw in the picture has been replaced with quilts from the flea market. I like all of these things a lot and do not want to replace them. But I also feel like one more antique/flea market piece might make the whole room look like you've walked into a flea market.

I'm wondering about something with a more modern vibe? And I'm wondering if I should consider two small tables rather than one big one to make it easier to move them--since it's clear they will get moved around maybe they would hold up better that way.

I'm having some trouble posting pictures so this is going to be a serial post--back in a few minutes with more pictures. Sorry.

And another recent flea market find. This former 1920s radio now holds our tv components.

    Random coffee tables

West elm ( I don't think square is ideal?)

    Crate and barrel.

    More random coffee tables

    Target

    Sundance catalog (rubber top???)

    Sundance--two of these?

I should mention that glass is not a possibility--two kids, dog, etc and I would not be able to keep it looking nice.

I think at this point I need to figure out a general direction. Rectangle? Oval? Two smaller pieces? And then I can hunt for the exact piece.

I am also wondering if my room is headed towards looking too leggy. And if so, if the table needs to compensate for that. I had been thinking of a trunk. But then I got a little worried since I do still have a five year old--could she get stuck in it? And i think it might be best to have no storage in this piece so my family can't jam junk in it.

Maybe something like this to accommodate your family moving the table around. Also, I personally feel you have too much dark furniture. Perhaps a metal piece or some glass to make the space appear more open and airy. Also, with so many flea market pieces that catch the eye...do you want other piece to pull the eye? Just some more things to consider. Happy hunting!!! =)

ps...just saw your comment about glass. Ooops. I have glass and metal with a 5 & 3 year old. I've had no issues. Here is the table I have:

Thanks! The first piece with the little tables under the big one is very nice and would be great for creating more table options.

What my family does is push the table away from the sofa so they can sit in between it and the floor. Then they pull it in so they can use it to prop feet on or so they can reach drinks on it while laying down on the sofa. The little tables underneath would work really well for that second scenario. Where did you find it?

I'm pondering how it would work for the pushing the table away from the sofa scenario. I don't want to buy something that will just get ruined again from moving it around all the time. Maybe I should go with two smaller pieces so they would be lighter and easier to move?

Glass would just look terrible here. My dog would slobber on it, my kids would smudge it. And I'd be mad when I had to clean it everyday or look at it smudged.

So, the nesting table in the pic I attached earlier I s crazy expensive ($1600...gasp!!!). I didn't realize until I clicked the link...I just thought the table was beautiful. The second picture I'm attaching below is the kind of table my in laws have. Maybe this type of table will work???

Thank you! I think the too much wood is a good point. I may poke around some metal tables and see if anything catches my eye.

I saw a copper top coffee table -- I think it was at Pier One. Something like that would add some contrast and interest. I have seen some other nesting coffee tables -- you might find one more modestly priced or with other finishes (google -- ound some at Wayfair, Overstock, PureHome here at Houzz and many others).

Can I recommend a table on wheels since you stated your family likes to move it around? Our last rectangular coffee table had wheels that showed with three baskets underneath for storage. Our current round table has hidden wheels. I don't think I'd ever go back to a stationary table in the family room. It's just me and DH but we move it around all the time....to eat, write, put our feet on, etc.. lots of places carry them...I think we got ours from Wayfair.

I was going to suggest a table with casters, too. We have one in our family room, and it's nice even to move around for vacuuming.

Thanks everyone! I haven't ever had one with casters. I will look around for those.

Something like this? (From way fair). Metal base, wood veneer top, casters. If you have casters, do you find the table moves around when you put your feet up? I found a review of one (not this one) that said even with locking casters it still moved.

Maybe a simple parsons style table? We have an eclectic mix of furniture but I love my basic parsons coffee table from Room and Board. Crate and Barrel has them too, I think.

Also, you can add casters to almost any coffee table. We used to have a wood coffee table from PB and we added casters to it because we had the same issue you have when our kids were younger.

Crl......no, my tables have not slid around while using and neither one had/has locking casters. Now, if I have my feet up and move my legs it might roll a little but that's it. Great for vacuuming too as Lisa pointed out.

    Thanks everyone!

This may be far out there in terms of what you were looking for but I figured I would share this from West Elm. I have one of these and you can move is so easily.

They come in copper, silver and antique brass.

    Thank you!

Continued dithering. What do you think of this metal coffee table on casters?

The price is right. It is on casters so it can be moved easily. It is metal, rather than more wood, but a little less shiny than some options--I don't mind shiny but nothing else in this room is shiny so too shiny seems like it would stand out too much. And it is one big smooth surface on top, which I belatedly realized is important because my 12 year old often does his homework there.

Maybe some bunching tables? I love the versatility and they make a statement. You can also find some good deals by using two side tables joined up (depending on the height). For my own home i bought two vintage brass side tables on ebay very cheap. Mine are a bit higher than a standard coffee table height but we like it that way as it's more comfortable for us with less bending. Here's some ideas... http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=+bunching+coffee+tables&FORM=HDRSC2

The best part about bunching is that you can make any size you want, my two joined are 52 L X 26 wide. If you do a simple style and use side tables for bunching which are sometimes too high but sometimes Not...you even have room for little short stools under.

I like the idea of two tables for ease of moving them. But I realized my twelve year old often uses the coffee table to do his homework (yes he has a desk in his room). So one bigger table is more functional at this point.

Too bad this one from Newman Marcus is out of budget.

I am thinking maybe I should hunt Craigslist for a wood one to paint. The problem with the metal ones is that I can't figure out how to add casters. So unless it already has them I'm out of luck. With wood, I could add casters and paint.

Hopefully this picture of the too expensive one from Neiman Marcus will show up bigger.
